Long-term residence for Ukrainians in the Netherlands: the government is considering new opportunities

The Netherlands is considering granting long-term residence permits to refugees from Ukraine. This will apply to those who work, pay taxes and contribute to the country's economy. Find out more about the reasons for this decision and how the experience of other EU countries demonstrates the effectiveness of such approaches
The Dutch authorities are actively working to find solutions for Ukrainians who are under temporary protection in the country. One such option is to grant long-term residence permits to those who work and pay taxes.
This was reported by De Telegraaf with reference to the Minister of Migration and Asylum Marjolein Faber.

Prospects for long-term stay of Ukrainians in the Netherlands
The European Union has already extended the temporary protection status for Ukrainian refugees until at least March 2026.
However, due to the uncertainty about the end of the war, the Dutch authorities believe that it is necessary to develop a “national alternative” that will guarantee stability for Ukrainians who have already integrated into society.
According to Minister Faber's statement, the proposed long-term residence permit will be valid for those Ukrainians who:
- reside in the Netherlands;
- have a job
- pay taxes;
- contribute to the development of the economy and society.
If you work in the Netherlands and pay taxes, you may have a chance to get a long-term residence permit. However, it is important to prepare all the documents in advance and know the legal nuances.
To avoid mistakes and delays, you should consult an experienced lawyer. A specialist will help you assess your chances, prepare the application correctly, and accompany you at every stage.
Experience of other European countries
Similar mechanisms are already in place in a number of EU countries. For example:
- Poland allows Ukrainians to apply for a three-year residence permit.
- Austria, the Czech Republic, and Romania have developed programs for long-term stay of working Ukrainians.
According to the Klingendahl Institute, these countries seek to retain skilled Ukrainian workers, as the integration of young professionals into the local labor market can be economically beneficial.

Preventing overloading of the asylum system
A separate status for Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands could help avoid potential overloading of the migration system after March 2026. There are currently more than 120,000 Ukrainians in the country, and if they all apply for asylum at the same time, it could put a serious strain on administrative resources.
Programs for returning to their homeland
At the same time, the Dutch government is also considering options to support the voluntary return of Ukrainian refugees to Ukraine after the security situation normalizes.
The Netherlands seeks to create a flexible system that will help Ukrainians stay in the country legally and at the same time not overload the migration sphere. The final conditions and criteria for granting long-term residence permits are still being discussed, but it is already clear that the country is focused on retaining working and economically active Ukrainians.
