What is a Green Card and what is it for?

A Green Card is an international insurance policy that confirms the existence of compulsory third-party liability insurance for the owner of a vehicle. It is required to enter most European countries and allows you to cover possible expenses in the event of an accident.

Regardless of your status abroad, car insurance is mandatory if you use your own car. This also applies to those Ukrainians who have been granted temporary protection status.

Does temporary protection status exempt me from the need to obtain a Green Card?

No, the temporary protection status does not cancel the obligation to insure a car. It gives you the right to residence, employment and social support, but does not change the traffic rules and insurance requirements of the host country.

If you have travelled abroad by your own car, the temporary protection status does not make any exceptions to insurance: in all EU countries and other countries that are part of the Green Card system, the policy is mandatory.

If your Green Card is about to expire, you need to take care of renewing it. To do this, you can:

- Apply for a new Green Card policy online.

- Purchase local insurance in the country of residence.

However, it is worth noting that obtaining local motor insurance in the host country is more valuable and valid only in the country of issue. This means that you still need a Green Card to travel to other countries.
