The small Southeast Asian country of Cambodia has one of the fastest-growing economies in the world, and the country's capital, Phnom Penh, has turned into a bustling city full of skyscrapers, shopping malls and restaurants. Now, Phnom Penh is the most expensive city in Cambodia, and life in other cities of the country will cost 10-25% cheaper.

One person can spend up to $1,000 a month on meals at inexpensive restaurants or cooking at home. You can also eat at local restaurants for less than $5, or drink some local Angkor beer at the bar for about $1 a bottle.

Renting housing in small towns is cheaper. For example, Battambang, the second-largest city in Cambodia, located near the border with Thailand. Renting a one-room apartment here will cost about $225.

Living here, you will find yourself in a classic French colonial-era city; the city center is dotted with art galleries, interesting architecture and great restaurants. Battambang is quite small and flat, and you can easily get around on foot or by bike.

Medical care in Cambodia has improved recently, with the country's first JCI-accredited hospital, which means the highest level of medical care by American standards. Phnom Penh Royal Hospital offers a full body examination with EKG and tests for $115. Doctors in private clinics charge only $5 for consultations, but a visit to an English-speaking doctor will cost about $25.

Cambodia uses two currencies, but the main one is the US dollar. Dollars can be withdrawn at most ATMs. Except for small purchases at the market or street food, most goods can be paid for in dollars.
