Switzerland is one of the countries that accepts and actively supports Ukrainians. In 2022, more than 70,000 refugees from Ukraine received "S status" in the state. However, according to the laws of Switzerland, if a Ukrainian is planning a trip outside the country, it is necessary to notify SEM and EVAM before departure.

Which departures should be reported to the relevant migration services? More details below.

When is it necessary to notify SEM and EVAM about departure from Switzerland?

If your trip will last longer than 5 working days, you must notify EVAM before departure. This rule applies to all Ukrainians, even those who do not receive social assistance in Switzerland. It is worth noting that the cantonal authorities must have clear information about the period of your stay outside Switzerland and the reasons for leaving.

The authorities consider each case separately, so if a Ukrainian has good reasons for a long stay abroad (study, business trip), then such a term can be agreed upon.

Importantly! For the period of stay abroad, the provision of social assistance to holders of "S status" is temporarily suspended.

Rules of travel within the Schengen area

The duration of the trip within the Schengen zone should not exceed 90 days within 180 days. In order to leave, a Ukrainian must have a valid foreign passport and an issued "S status". It is better to find out the entry requirements for each individual country in advance at their representative offices in Switzerland.

Travel to countries that are not members of the Schengen area

If a Ukrainian travels to a country that is not a member of the Schengen zone for a period of two or more months, the "S status" is canceled, because such a trip is considered a change of residence.

Is it possible to go to Ukraine?

Departure to Ukraine is allowed, but you must notify EVAM about your trip and specify the period of stay and the purpose of the trip as clearly as possible.

Importantly! "Status S" can be canceled if the refugee stays in Ukraine for more than 15 days per quarter. However, this rule does not apply to those who can prove that such a long stay is due to valid reasons - care for a sick relative, preparation for returning to Ukraine on a permanent basis, etc.
