Due to the war, thousands of Ukrainian refugees have arrived in Germany over the past year. The country provided enormous assistance to Ukrainians who had to leave their homes. Currently, the territory of Germany is full of immigrants. This causes certain problems with the accommodation of newly arrived people, so settlement is possible today only in certain lands of the country.

How does Germany plan to solve the issue of the lack of places to accommodate Ukrainians?

Currently, there is a big problem with the accommodation of refugees in the country. That is why the Ministry of Internal Affairs convened a meeting at which a detailed discussion with local authorities of the difficult situation currently observed in connection with the increase in the number of refugees is planned.

The main goal of the meeting is to regulate the placement of immigrants in those regions that have received the most people so far. Berlin and Hamburg are the cities most crowded with refugees. As of October 2022, the largest number of Ukrainians lived in the densely populated federal states: North Rhine-Westphalia, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony.

The German Association of Cities plans to put forward its version of the distribution of displaced persons by cities and regions, as well as to emphasize the need to help the residents of Turkey and Syria, who lost their homes due to the earthquake and plan to temporarily leave for Europe.

"Most regions are currently at the limit of their capabilities and need active help in order to continue accepting refugees", - said the vice president of the German Association of Cities Eckart Würzner.

The heads of local authorities note that the funds planned to be allocated for the accommodation of refugees in 2023 will not be enough. Also, some mayors stated that regions do not receive compensation for integration in schools and kindergartens.

"We no longer have enough space to provide refugees with comfortable housing and provide their children with education in educational institutions", - said a member of the Hessen city council.

Meanwhile, representatives of the state of Schleswig-Holstein say they are currently 10,000 places short of the people who have already arrived.

Among Ukrainian refugees in Germany, women and young people predominate

Due to the ban on men leaving Ukraine, Ukrainian women and children predominate in Germany. As of 2022, the number of women aged 18 to 60 compared to men who moved to Germany is 70%.

Compared to the general population of Germany, Ukrainians currently living in the country are much younger. As of October 2022, there were only 13% of Ukrainians over the age of 60.

According to general estimates, 962,000 refugees from Ukraine arrived in Germany in 2022. This number significantly exceeds the number of refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq for the period from 2014 to 2016.
