Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Ireland has provided protection to 75,000 Ukrainians. Currently, the issue of accommodation of refugees has become acute in the country, but the government nevertheless decided to continue temporary protection and assistance for citizens of Ukraine.

How long did Ireland extend temporary protection for Ukrainians?

According to the Minister of Justice of Ireland, Simon Harris, the temporary residence permit will be extended until March 4, 2024.

You do not need to contact the institutions - the permit will be updated automatically. If necessary, you can download an updated document from the Irish Migration Service website.

"The Irish government and our colleagues across Europe continue to strongly support the Ukrainian government and its people. The commitment to European solidarity is now more evident than ever and is reflected in the recent decision of the EU Commission to extend the temporary protection until March 2024”, - the official said.

Ireland is considering options for Ukrainian refugees to stay in the country after the end of the war: details

The country's government is currently working on options for Ukrainians to stay in Ireland after the end of the war and to make it easier for them to obtain residence permits and citizenship. The Irish Times write about it.

The government is also preparing for a doubling of the number of refugees from Ukraine and the fact that many will want to stay in Ireland to live.

Ireland's Integration Minister Joe O'Brien said that tens of thousands of Ukrainians should be given a path to permanent residence so that they can apply for citizenship or a residence permit.

In particular, the Ministry of Justice is considering options for granting status to Ukrainians for up to five years, after which they can apply for citizenship.

As you know, Ukrainian refugees in Ireland are classified as recipients of temporary protection with the right to live, work and receive benefits within the framework of the EU directive.

According to the minister, a significant part of Ukrainians in Ireland will decide to stay there for a long time. The official noted that government departments should plan for the same number of people from Ukraine as in 2022.

"Each county in the state will have to place modular homes at a level far greater than the 700 facilities that are currently planned at the national level", - the minister noted.

The state will have to buy a lot of real estate to accommodate asylum seekers in the coming months and reduce their reliance on hotel accommodation.

Additionally, Ireland supports refugees from Ukraine with social benefits.

In particular, each migrant can apply for social benefits for both adults and children from the Department of Social Support (DSP). Read more about social support for refugees at the link.
