The hosting center for refugees from Ukraine on the territory of the former Tegel airport in Berlin continues to operate. This was stated by Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffai.

Earlier, it was known that the center was supposed to work until the end of June, but the Berlin Senate decided to extend the work of the institution until the end of September 2023. This decision also applies to the extension of the temporary accommodation center in Terminal C.

Why was the refugee reception center at the former Tegel Airport extended?

The decision was made due to the lack of housing to accommodate Ukrainians fleeing the war in Germany. Therefore, the Berlin authorities cannot refuse to use the former airport for the needs of refugees.

How many Ukrainians are currently staying at the refugee center?

At present, about three thousand people are staying at the refugee reception center in the former Tegel airport, with a maximum capacity of 4300 people. Moreover, 2600 of them have been staying there longer than the planned three days.

In view of this, the refugee center may be extended even until the end of this year, although it was previously planned to close at the end of June.

As you know, since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Germany has accepted about 1.1 million Ukrainian refugees.

Meanwhile, about 1,000 people from different countries seeking international asylum continue to move to Berlin every month, with an average of about 2,000 fugitives from the war in Ukraine.

We remind you! The absence of air travel reduces the options for getting to Ukraine. However, the country's land borders are open, so we have prepared routes to enter Ukraine from Germany. Details can be found in our article here.
