Journalist's Day in Ukraine, celebrated annually on June 6, is an important reminder of the role of media representatives in our society and especially their importance during military conflicts. What is the history of Journalist's Day and how important is their role during the war, we tell below.

History of Journalist's Day in Ukraine

In Ukraine, this professional holiday was established on May 25, 1994. It was on this day in Brussels that the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine was accepted into the ranks of the International Federation of Journalists by an overwhelming majority of votes. This year, Ukrainian journalists will celebrate their professional holiday for the 29th time.

It is worth noting that journalists are an important mechanism in the existence of a democratic state, as they perform the function of informing the public.

For example, in times of war, these people provide up-to-date information about the course of hostilities, their effects on the local population and global consequences. Journalists convey different points of view and analyze a complex political situation. This helps people understand what is happening and make informed decisions.

The importance of Journalists' Day

Journalists' Day reminds us of the importance of protecting freedom of speech and freedom of the press, especially in wartime. Journalists play a key role in keeping society transparent and informed. They help us to understand the scale of destruction and suffering caused by war.

Not only on this day, but always, we must respect the work of media representatives who tirelessly strive to uncover the truth and convey the voices of those who suffer under armed aggression. Their professionalism, courage and commitment to the ideals of journalism deserve our admiration and support.

The role of journalists during the war in Ukraine

From the very beginning of russia's full-scale war against Ukraine, not only Ukrainian media representatives, but also journalists from international publications such as BBC, CNN, Reuters, etc. have been actively working in our country.

Many of them are covering events directly from the battlefield.

It should not be forgotten that the work of journalists during the war is fraught with enormous risks and dangers. However, despite all the difficulties, they continue to fulfill their mission, realizing the importance of their work and the need to provide objective information to the public.

It is worth noting that the presence of foreign journalists in Ukraine is a very important mechanism for informing the international community about the situation in our country.

Despite the fact that entry to Ukraine is somewhat restricted during martial law, journalists still strive to visit our country and show the full picture of what is happening.

By the way, the Visit Ukraine team facilitates the work of media representatives and offers to organize press tours to different cities of Ukraine, including the de-occupied regions.

In cooperation with Visit Ukraine, many journalists have visited Ukrainian cities and covered the most important events in Ukraine today.

You can find out what makes our press tours unique here.

How can foreign journalists get to Ukraine during the war?

Foreign journalists do not face any problems when entering the territory of Ukraine, as all the rules are clearly spelled out in the legislation, and therefore there are no unforeseen obstacles.

It is also important that no additional restrictions have been imposed due to martial law, except for the need to comply with certain security measures. For more details, please follow the link.

It should also be borne in mind that martial law necessitates certain restrictions on the territory of Ukraine. In addition to the standard rules regarding curfews and safety during air raids and missile attacks, a foreigner must have reliable insurance covering military risks. Such a policy provides not only for emergency care and outpatient treatment, but also for coverage of risks and accidents related to military or terrorist acts. This is especially true for correspondents who are on the front lines, in liberated territories under fire, and in cities with an increased threat of missile attacks from russia.

We remind you! Earlier, we wrote that the full-scale invasion of russia was the impetus for the development of the military sector in Ukraine. Find out how Ukraine has turned into a military innovator and how the brave soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are fighting today. Details are available here.
