The procedure for registering a marriage in Ukraine is much simpler than in many other countries. However, the conclusion of an "international" marriage and a marriage under martial law have their own peculiarities. We will tell you how a foreigner can get married in Ukraine without turning the marriage process into a bureaucratic red tape.

Marriages in which the bride and groom are citizens of different countries are traditionally called international marriages. The procedure for registering such a marriage can be regular and take a month and a half, or expedited - about a week.

How a foreigner can apply for marriage

The regular dprocedure for registering a marriage

● Submit an application for marriage to the registry office

● Set a date for marriage registration (one month after submitting the application);

● The Civil Registration Service will contact the State Migration Service of Ukraine to obtain a conclusion on the legality of the foreigner's stay in Ukraine;

● On the specified date, your marriage will be registered and you will receive a certificate.

Please note that you can apply for marriage registration directly online through the Diia portal. Read more about how foreigners can use the Diia app here.

Expedited procedure: "Marriage in a day"

Since the summer of 2016, it has become possible to get married in Ukraine "overnight". This service is paid. The cost of such registration, including the cost of the registry office, mediator and state fee for marriage registration, is approximately UAH 3,000-3,500.

Couples wishing to marry under the simplified procedure sign an agreement with an intermediary. The newlyweds also jointly register their marriage and pay the state fee.

After that, the couple arrives at the commune or town hall at the location of the intermediary on a pre-agreed date and time, where the marriage will be registered by the state.

The sequence of actions for concluding a marriage in a day is the same as in the usual procedure, but it is much faster - from 3 days to 7 days.

Marriage with a foreigner in wartime

After the start of the full-scale invasion of russia, Ukraine called on those willing to join in protecting the security of the entire world. Thus, the created International Legion united thousands of foreigners in a common goal, fighting side by side with the Ukrainian army.

And even in the midst of a brutal war, love found its place and connected many hearts right at the front. Read more about the incredible stories of true love of the military here.

For brides and grooms whose lives are in danger due to russian aggression, there is an opportunity to speed up the marriage registration process without applying for the "marriage in a day" service.

A marriage certificate can be obtained in one day. For example, if the bride or groom are military personnel. In such cases, the couple may get married on the day of application or on another date if they notify the Ministry of Justice within one month.
