Starting July 1, Lviv will start testing a new public transportation system - passengers will be able to transfer for free. Find out how it works and what you need to know to use the new service
Starting July 1, Lviv will start testing public transportation with free transfers. The new service will allow passengers to transfer between buses, trams or trolleybuses without additional payment within 40 minutes after the first validation. The free transfer will be available to holders of the city's LeoCard. This was reported by the Lviv City Council.
We remind you that you can buy bus/train/plane tickets within Ukraine and between cities around the world on the Visit Ukraine portal. Book tickets for different types of transport through a single booking system and save money on travel with our loyalty program.
How does the free transfer work in Lviv?
Oleh Zabarylo, Head of the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure at Lviv City Council, explained that passengers who validate their LeoCard in the first vehicle can transfer to another vehicle within 40 minutes and pay only 13 hryvnias for one trip.
At the same time, he emphasized that all transfers will require registration in each vehicle.
How does it work?
The passenger enters the first vehicle, validates his or her LeoCard, and then has 40 minutes to transfer to the next vehicle. After validation in the second vehicle, funds are withdrawn for one trip, regardless of the number of transfers within 40 minutes.
"That is, all trips registered no later than 40 minutes after the first validation in the first vehicle will be charged as one and will cost only 13 hryvnias," Zabarylo emphasized.
The final LeoCard balance will be updated the next day after the vehicle is used.

Technical details: how can passengers find out the exact time when they made the first validation?
To check the time of validation and the status of the LeoCard account, passengers can use the validator in the vehicle. Information about the time of trip registration will be available on the screen of the validator.
Public transport fares in Lviv
Lviv has unified public transportation fares. The cost of one trip in buses, trams, and trolleybuses depends on the payment method:
– 13 UAH - when paying with a LeoCard transport card;
– 15 UAH - when paying with a bank card or NFC device;
– 20 UAH - if you pay in cash at the driver's station;
– 6.5 UAH - for students when paying with a student transport card LeoCard.
According to the city council's website, since the introduction of cashless fare payment six months ago, more than 50 million trips have been registered in the e-ticket system. Of these, almost 65% were paid for with LeoCards, 16% with bank cards, and 19% with cash. However, the number of passengers who pay for public transportation to the driver tends to decrease.
The introduction of free transfers is part of a strategy to promote cashless payments in Lviv. This will contribute to convenience and savings for city residents.
We remind you! A bill recently adopted by the Verkhovna Rada provides for the introduction of electronic tickets in buses, trolleybuses, trams and subways throughout the country. This is a significant step towards modernizing the fare collection system and making public transport easier for passengers.
