The Ministry of Infrastructure of Poland has put forward a proposal to change the tariffs and the procedure for calculating fines in the country. For which traffic violations Polish drivers will have to pay more and when the proposal is expected to come into force, we will tell you in the article.

Road fines in Poland are to be increased: details

Due to the disappointing statistics of road traffic accidents in Poland, the Ministry of Infrastructure believes that it is advisable to increase liability for traffic violations by drivers. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the number of accidents on Polish roads increased by 12% compared to the same period last year.

First of all, fines for speeding are expected to increase. The Ministry of Infrastructure has proposed to take away the right to drive for 3 months from drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h on single-lane and two-way roads.

It is also reported that the reduction of penalty points for the most serious traffic violations will be cancelled. Currently, Polish drivers who have committed road traffic offences can reduce their penalty points by participating in special training sessions held by regional traffic centres.

However, once the proposals of the Ministry of Infrastructure come into force, the cancellation of penalty points will not be possible for drivers who have committed the following offences:

● gross speeding;

● overtaking on two-way roads;

● overtaking on a pedestrian crossing.

It is noted that the full list of these offences is currently under development, so the final list of offences for which penalty points cannot be deducted may differ from the above. Work on the new penalties is already underway, so we can expect the updated tariffs to come into force in a few months.

What is the penalty for expired insurance in Poland?

From 1 July 2024, fines for invalid compulsory car insurance (Ubezpieczenie Odpowiedzialności Cywilnej) have been increased in Poland. Thus, if a car driver's insurance is overdue for a period of 1 to 3 days, a fine of PLN 1,720 will be charged, from 4 to 14 days - PLN 4,300, and for a period exceeding 14 days - PLN 8,600.

However, Ukrainians who currently reside in Poland and have a valid Green Card policy do not need to take out Polish insurance. Read more about this here.

The Green Card is a compulsory international motor third party liability insurance policy that covers the costs of compensation for damage to life, health and property of third parties caused by an accident in Poland and other member states of the international Green Card agreement.

You can buy a Green Card both abroad and in Ukraine. However, insurance abroad will be much more expensive. For example, in Poland, the cost of a Green Card for 1 month starts from 50 euros.

Therefore, it is better to buy insurance online, as it is quick and easy. On the Visit Ukraine portal, you can take out a Green Card policy from a licensed insurer. The calculator allows you to calculate the exact price of the policy individually for your vehicle. Packages are available for different periods from 15 days to 1 year for cars and trucks, trailers and semi-trailers for trucks, as well as motorcycles and scooters.

Please note! For those Ukrainians who have travelled abroad in their own cars due to the war, it is advisable to research the laws and regulations of the country in which they are currently staying. You can find out which countries require mandatory vehicle registration and whether you need to undergo a technical inspection here.
