Tomorrow, full train traffic on the blue line of the metro will resume in Kyiv: details
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko has announced the resumption of full train traffic on the blue line of the Kyiv metro between Demiivska and Lybidska stations after nine months of repairing the overpass tunnel. Find out more about the restoration, as well as what repairs were carried out and how much it cost
Starting September 12, 2024, full train traffic will be resumed on the blue line of the Kyiv Metro between the Heroiv Dnipra and Teremky stations. According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on Telegram, this became possible due to the completion of a large-scale repair of the tunnel between Demiivska and Lybidska stations, which lasted almost nine months.
Why was the subway closed and what was done during the repair?
The repair of the overhead tunnel between Demiivska and Teremky stations began in December 2023. It was one of the most difficult sections of the Kyiv subway due to difficult hydrogeological conditions. Thousands of trains ran through this tunnel every day, and its wear and tear had become apparent.
The repair involved replacing the tunnel lining, which had previously been damaged by water leaks and other geological processes. The repairs included waterproofing, chemical soil reinforcement, replacement of the old part of the tunnel and its subsequent rehabilitation.
According to the mayor of Kyiv, more than 200 cable networks were relocated as part of the work, including DTEK and Ukrtelecom networks, which ensure the stability of electricity supply. Specialists also dug a 15-meter-deep pit to dismantle the old 27-meter-long section of the tunnel, which was replaced with a new one. In addition, along with the restoration work, expert studies were conducted to determine the causes of the emergency. In particular, it was confirmed that it was caused by certain errors at the design stage and poor-quality construction and installation work during the construction of this section of the tunnel. Laboratory tests also confirmed gross violations during construction in terms of the lack of chemical consolidation of the soils around the tunnel.
In total, the builders constructed a new tunnel more than 50 meters long and restored all the necessary utilities to ensure train safety.

Impact on passengers: what has changed?
During the repair work, shuttle trains were running between stations. This created some inconvenience for passengers as transfers took longer. In addition, ground transportation duplicated the closed sections of the subway, which also affected traffic and increased passenger traffic in other modes of transportation.
With the resumption of full-fledged traffic on the blue line, passengers will be able to return to their usual schedule, and travel time will be significantly reduced.
Financial aspect: how much did you spend on repairs?
The estimated cost of the repair was UAH 383 million, which is UAH 62 million less than originally planned. Thanks to the efficient organization of the work, we managed to reduce the cost while maintaining the quality of the activities.
