Norway is part of the Schengen area, although it is not an EU country, so Ukrainians can enter Norway without a visa.

You can enter Norway on the basis of a Ukrainian biometric passport. The permitted period of stay is up to 90 days within 180 days (the usual period for the Schengen area). Also, Ukrainian citizens can cross the border of Norway without a biometric passport, including children, but only by land (car, bus) and ship. This journey will take about 20 hours. By plane it will be much faster, 2-3 hours. Norway has air connections with many European countries, in Poland flights depart from Warsaw, Wroclaw, Gdansk and Katowice.

Health insurance is mandatory for all Ukrainians to enter the country for tourist purposes. Refugees are not required to have insurance at the border, but we strongly recommend that you get it for the first 90 days.

At the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Norwegian government decided to grant "temporary collective protection" to Ukrainian citizens in Norway. Collective protection means that the Directorate for Foreigners (UDI) does not consider the need for protection on an individual basis, but provides it to all Ukrainians who fled the war, as well as their family members. This procedure greatly simplifies the paperwork and speeds up the provision of assistance to Ukrainians.

You can apply for protection in Norway at the refugee center in Råde or at police stations. In most cities, before visiting the police department, you need to call in advance and arrange an appointment. 

At the migration office, your fingerprints will be taken and you will be helped to fill out an application form (the whole process will take 3 to 4 hours). The application may take several weeks to be processed.

Temporary protection is limited in time: it is granted for one year and can be extended for up to three years. It gives the right to health care, employment, education, social support and attendance at Norwegian language courses.

In Norway, free housing is provided for Ukrainians. Upon arrival, you will be accommodated in a reception center. Then, when your documents are processed and you are granted protection, you will be placed in the relevant community in the country. It is the community that will be responsible for providing housing.

Most often, you are accommodated in special small dormitories. Before checking in, the authorities must inspect the living conditions: whether they meet the standards, whether the refugee will feel comfortable there, and how safe it is to stay there.

If you are planning to rent an apartment, it is better to look for it on your own than through an agency. We advise you to focus on Norwegian websites, as you can be sure that prices will not be too high for foreigners.

One of the most popular sites is Finn.no. Ads in English are collected on Nespick.com and Rentberry.com. The monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment ranges from 800 to 1200 EUR, depending on the city.

Ukrainians who are unable to provide for themselves are entitled to financial assistance to cover basic needs: food, accommodation, access to medical services, primary, secondary and higher education. However, it should be borne in mind that Norway is one of the most expensive countries in the world in terms of living costs, so all other needs will have to be met by our citizens at their own expense, and that this will cost significantly more than in other European countries. Monthly payments at the Norwegian krone rate are approximately 1800 euros per adult, but the program may be adjusted over time.

Also, financial support is provided to Ukrainians participating in the orientation program and children. 

Ukrainians have the right to receive medical care in Norway if you are sick, need dental services or have a certain addiction. However, after visiting a doctor, adults have to pay a personal share, according to the established tariffs. The amount usually ranges from 15-35 euros. However, it is worth noting that assistance is provided even if you are unable to pay for it. You do not have to pay for hospitalization in a hospital.

Children under the age of 16 do not need to pay for the services of a doctor, psychologist, physical therapist or X-ray. Services at maternal and child health centers and school health services are free of charge. All children have the right to be examined and vaccinated at the children's health centers and school health services.

For the period of martial law in Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved the Temporary Procedure for Entering Information in the Passport of a Citizen of Ukraine for Traveling Abroad. This document provides for the possibility of extending the validity of a biometric passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad, as well as entering information about a child in the passport of the parent for traveling abroad.

Both actions are carried out free of charge, on the day of application to the Embassy.

Children under 16 years of age, if they do not have a passport of a citizen of Ukraine for traveling abroad, can be entered in the passport(s) of their parents, according to the procedure established by the Temporary Procedure.
