On Wednesday, August 23, the third summit of the Crimean Platform kicked off, bringing together representatives of more than 60 countries. The meeting is taking place against the backdrop of the Ukrainian counteroffensive, the ultimate goal of which is, among other things, to de-occupy the seized Crimea. We will tell you what topics will be discussed at the current summit.

What is the Crimean Platform?

At the initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Crimean Platform was launched in 2021 as a diplomatic platform to unite international efforts to de-occupy the Crimean peninsula,

The inaugural summit was held in Kyiv in 2021. It resulted in the adoption of a declaration condemning human rights violations in Crimea, the militarization of the peninsula, obstruction of navigation through the Kerch Strait, and the change in the demographic structure of the peninsula due to the resettlement of russian citizens to Crimea.

The second summit was held in August 2022, bringing together 60 representatives of countries from around the world. At that time, the participants expressed support for Ukraine in its fight against the russian aggressor, called on russia to immediately withdraw troops and equipment from the territory of Ukraine, including Crimea, and to stop serious crimes against Ukrainians and the persecution of Crimean Tatars.

Who is participating in the Crimean Platform?

In 2023, the summit is planned in a mixed format, with some participants joining the summit in person and some online.

On the eve of the summit, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova said that this year's talks would include 4 new countries.

As you know, before the summit, President of Hungary Katalin Novak and Prime Minister of Moldova Dorin Recean arrived in Ukraine. Announcing the third meeting on Crimea, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte to attend.

What is being discussed at the current summit?

According to official statements, the Crimean Platform 2023 will focus on the issues of territorial integrity, the future of the peninsula after its de-occupation, and humanitarian policy.

Participants will also discuss security in the Azov-Black Sea region as a key component for the operation of grain corridors.

Emine Dzhaparova, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine, said that the summit will develop around such signals: "There can be no trade around Crimea, as Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine, and secondly, that Ukraine will decide on the way to de-occupy the peninsula."

It is worth noting that the current summit will be the first time that the issue of Crimea's reintegration after the war will be raised.

According to Dzhaparova, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy initiated the domestic political track at the summit. At the second panel, representatives of various Ukrainian ministries will discuss the restoration of Crimea after the war.

Meanwhile, the third panel will address humanitarian policy issues, including the demographic situation on the peninsula, human rights violations, and the forced russian passportization of Ukrainian citizens.

We remind you! Ukraine is just beginning to take steps to return all the occupied territories, but the country must now be prepared for the challenges it will face along the way. Here, we describe what experts call the most difficult problems in the process of reintegration of Crimea and Donbas.
