A green card is a necessary insurance policy for driving your own car outside of Ukraine for a safe trip. Find out in detail what documents are required for insurance, when the Green Card becomes valid and other issues
A green card is an insurance document used in member countries of the international automobile insurance system. This policy is necessary for traveling outside Ukraine by car.
Many of our compatriots have never bought a green card, so they are interested in the details of such a policy. We answer the most common questions in our material.
Why should I buy a Green Card?
This policy is an analogue of the Ukrainian compulsory auto civil liability insurance, so it is necessary to cover property damage or damage to the health and life of third parties in the event of an insured event. The need to take out international insurance is recorded in the Law of Ukraine "On Mandatory Civil Liability Insurance of Land Vehicle Owners".
In which countries is the Green Card valid?
Currently, the policy is required for 44 countries:
Austria, Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Switzerland, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Estonia, Liechtenstein, Great Britain, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Israel, Iran, Ireland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Morocco, Moldova, Macedonia, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, France, Finland, Hungary.
Do the border guards check for insurance?
You cannot leave Ukraine to Europe by car without a Green Card. The employee of the border service will check the availability of the policy by scanning the unique QR code specified in the contract or on the website of the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine.
Let's add that border guards can check documents only within the borders of the border strip.
What documents are required for insurance?
In order to issue a "Green Card" policy, you need:
• Foreign passport or driver's license;
• Technical passport of the car;
• Individual tax number.
You can buy a policy online using the link.
Should I add the names of all persons who will use the car to the policy?
It is not necessary to do this. The insurance certificate is automatically extended to drivers who drive a car on legal grounds.
When does the Green Card come into force?
You can use the policy no earlier than midnight the day after the conclusion of the contract.
What to do if the insurance period has expired abroad?
Reissue your current policy online - it's convenient and fast, because you don't need to return to Ukraine.
What is the amount of injury and property damage coverage under the policy?
Each country has its own amount of compensation. The average coverage of material damages in EU countries is EUR 1 million.
How to get compensation in case of a road accident abroad?
The owner of the "Green Card" can receive compensation only in the territory of those countries where the policy applies.
1. Damage caused by the fault of a foreign driver. Such compensation is provided by the driver's insurer;
2. Damage caused by the driver of an uninsured car. In this case, the National Bureau or the Guarantee Fund of the country where the road accident occurred will reimburse.
Information about the insurance company of the perpetrator of the traffic accident is indicated in the European Accident Statement.
Pay attention! In order for Ukrainian drivers to feel protected abroad, the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine has signed agreements with some national Bureaus of member countries of the international auto insurance system "Green Card" Agreement "On Protection of Visitors". According to them, the Motor (Transport) Insurance Bureau of Ukraine can advise the victim on establishing the insurer of the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident. Further communication regarding reimbursement should be conducted directly with the relevant insurance company.
We remind you that on December 14, the procedure for registering and re-registrating vehicles at service centers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs changed. Read more about it here.
