How to extend temporary protection in the Netherlands: detailed instructions for Ukrainians
The Netherlands has officially extended the residence permit for refugees from Ukraine until March 4, 2024. Learn more about how to extend temporary protection and stay legally in the country
The Dutch authorities have extended the Temporary Protection Directive until March 4, 2024, so Ukrainians can legally stay in the country for more than a year. However, you need to extend your status. How to do it - we will tell you further.
How can Ukrainians extend temporary protection in the Netherlands?
Confirm your place of residence
The only way to extend the temporary protection is to confirm your place of residence. You don't need to do anything, because the IND (Immigration and Naturalization Service) will automatically check the address.
All Ukrainians covered by the Temporary Protection Directive will receive a letter from the IND by February 25, 2023.
Pay attention! IND will send the letter to the address registered in the BRP (personal database). Check that your address is registered correctly.
We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the sample letter so as not to miss it - because this letter must be kept. View the translation of the letter in Ukrainian and English.
What should I do if I have not received a letter from the IND?
Call the IND if you are covered by the Temporary Protection Directive. There is no need to make an appointment, your question will be resolved over the phone.

By visiting this page, you will find all information about citizens who can receive temporary protection in the Netherlands.
We would like to add that changes have taken place this year, and refugees from Ukraine who do not have Ukrainian citizenship will not be able to receive temporary protection from March 4, 2023. If you fall into this category and have received a proof of residence letter, please ignore it - the IND sent the letter in error.
We will remind you! From February 1, the Netherlands changed the rules of stay for refugees, as well as the amount of financial assistance. For more information about what changes have been introduced, see the link.
