Czech Republic to cut financial support for Ukrainian refugees from July 1: what is known
Starting July 1, 2023, the Czech government will change the provision of humanitarian aid to Ukrainians who have taken refuge in the country. Learn more about the new payment amounts
The Czech Republic has been actively supporting Ukrainian refugees since the first days of the full-scale war. The country has spent most of its funds on humanitarian aid. According to the Czech Ministry of Finance, this amount is more than 1.5 billion euros. However, in order to reduce state budget expenditures, the Czech Republic will change its approach to financial payments starting July 1, 2023.
How does the Czech Republic help refugees?
The country hosted more than half a million refugees, a third of whom were children. To support Ukrainians seeking refuge abroad, the country spent 490 million euros (11.7 billion crowns).
Part of this amount, namely 315 million euros, was paid to Czechs who took Ukrainians into their homes. Another part was spent on medical services for refugees - about 240 million euros.
The total expenditures of the Czech Republic for humanitarian purposes amount to 1.52 billion euros (35.8 billion Czech crowns). It should be added that a significant part of the funds was allocated from the state budget - 24.6 billion CZK.
However, the costs should not be overestimated. It is important to understand that 100 thousand Ukrainians are employed in the Czech Republic. They pay taxes and fees, so part of the money goes back to the country's budget.

How will the financial support for Ukrainians in the Czech Republic change from July 1?
The rules for supporting refugees will change in July. The main changes will concern compensation for housing. The country will cancel payments to Czechs who have sheltered Ukrainians in their homes. Instead, Ukrainians will receive money directly for renting an apartment:
• CZK 3000 per person in an apartment that is registered;
• CZK 2400 - in unregistered housing.
This step will not only reduce costs. The Czech authorities want to encourage Ukrainians to find employment and thus be able to pay for housing.
Please note that the amount of financial allowance for refugees may vary. The reason for this is the assessment of refugees' earnings and savings, which will be carried out after the refugee applies for a new benefit.
In order to receive financial assistance in time, the relevant application should be submitted as soon as possible, preferably by the end of May.
In addition to the introduction of personal payment for housing, the amount of allowance will also change. In March, the Czech Parliament approved the draft law "Lex Ukraine", which changes the rules of humanitarian payments. Read how many refugees now receive from the Czech Republic here.
