Against the backdrop of general mobilization due to the ongoing russian aggression against Ukraine, the Ukrainian parliament has registered a bill that proposes to lift age restrictions for military service. What exactly is it about, we will discuss below.

It is worth noting that currently, men in the Ukrainian army can retire upon reaching the age of 60, but in some cases this happens later - after 65.

How does the parliament explain the bill?

According to the explanatory note, citizens currently perform military service in accordance with the law, which sets certain restrictions on service, including the age limit.

Article 22 of the Law of Ukraine "On Military Duty and Military Service" defines the age limit for military service, which is set for servicemen who perform military service during a special period, among the following persons

• privates, non-commissioned officers and sergeants, junior and senior officers - up to 60 years of age;

• senior officers - up to 65 years of age.

However, the Verkhovna Rada wants to supplement part 2 of Article 22 as follows: "During the martial law, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other military formations who have high professional training, practical experience in their positions, and are recognized by the military medical commission as fit for military service for health reasons, may, at their request, be retained in military service beyond the age limit for military service, without restrictions on age and duration of military service."

This means that the military will be able to regulate their age-related career and thus help the army as long as they have the physical and moral strength to do so.

It should be noted that this draft law is currently being worked on in a parliamentary committee. After its approval by the committee, it will be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada for consideration.

Fakes from the russians

Russians immediately began spreading false information online, saying that "Ukraine plans to draft pensioners into the army." However, these reports are untrue, as the draft law states that people who have served their time will be able to decide for themselves whether to continue their service or retire.

In May 2023, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine also decided to reduce the conscription age from 27 to 25 years. We explain why the government took this step here.

As you know, during general mobilization, all citizens of Ukraine liable for military service aged 18 to 60 can be called up for military service, unless they have legal grounds for postponement or exclusion from the register. However, according to the law, the following may be granted a deferment

- reserved workers (not all professions)

- men with disabilities;

- parents with three or more minor children;

- single parents;

- parents of a child with a disability and a seriously ill child;

- parents raising an adult child with a disability of group I-II;

- guardian of a spouse, parents (own or spouse's) with a disability or serious illness;

- a guardian of an incapacitated person or a person with a disability;

- men who have a minor child if their wife is on military service.

In addition, we wrote about how the scope of mobilization in Ukraine will change in the near future. Details are in our material.
