Imports of goods in January 2024: Ukraine imported almost as many drones as phones
For the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, drones have entered the top 10 imported goods. Find out what and from which countries Ukraine imports the most and how the share of imports for the needs of the army has changed
Among other things, Volodymyr Zelenskyy's order to work on the creation of the Unmanned Systems Forces in Ukraine led to a number of changes that also affect the import of goods to Ukraine. A little later, the Cabinet of Ministers adopted a resolution that allowed the state to purchase Mavic, Autel, and Matrice drones through the Prozorro system. Thus, for the first time since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, drones are among the top 10 goods imported to Ukraine. This was reported by the Center for Economic Strategy.
Import of goods in Ukraine: statistics
According to the published infographic, in January Ukraine imported almost as many drones as phones (in monetary terms). Thus, the total value of imported drones amounted to 99 million, which is 2% of all imports. Almost all drones were imported from China. For comparison, for the whole of 2023, imports of unmanned aerial vehicles accounted for 0.7%, or $441 million.
At the same time, phones were imported for $114 million 一 2.2% of imports, approximately 70% of which (by value) came from China.

– oil and oil products (9%)
– passenger cars (8%)
– plastics (4.8%)
– ferrous metals (3.6%)
– pharmaceuticals (3.5%)
– telephones (2.2%)
– optical goods (2.1%)
– drones (2.0%)
– fruits and nuts (1.9%)
– fish products (1.9%)

What countries do Ukraine import the most from?
As noted by the Center for Economic Strategy, citing data from the State Customs Service, the share of Chinese imports increased to 21.4% from 16% in 2023. At the same time, the share of imports from the EU fell below 50%. Currently, the top 10 countries include:
– China (21.7%)
– Poland (11.7%)
– Germany (7.6%)
– Turkey (6.4%)
– USA (5.5%)
– Greece (3.1%)
– Italy (2.9%)
– Slovakia (2.7%)
– Czech Republic (2.7%)
– France (2.3%)
It is worth noting that due to the situation on Ukraine's western borders, the share of imported goods through the Odesa region is also growing. In February 2024 alone, Odesa Customs fulfilled the indicative indicator of revenues to the state budget by 127%.
