The Ministry of Finance of Ukraine has provided a forecast for public debt payments until 2050, including an annual schedule. This is evidenced by the statistics of the Ministry.

How much debt should Ukraine pay by 2050: details

It is noted that the Ministry of Finance forecasts public debt payments based on existing agreements as of a certain date. The forecasts are updated monthly, taking into account changes in the amounts and terms of debt service, which is especially relevant due to regular financial assistance from external partners and new domestic borrowings amid the ongoing full-scale war.

The current forecast of the Ministry of Finance was prepared as of May 1. Public debt includes domestic and external obligations of Ukraine, but does not include publicly guaranteed debt and private sector debt.

Planned payments by Ukraine

According to the forecast of the Ministry of Finance, in 2024 Ukraine will have to pay about UAH 1.02 trillion on its public debt.

The projected repayments will decrease in the following years.

Thus, in 2025, the amount of payments will amount to almost UAH 870 billion, in 2026 - about UAH 621 billion, in 2027 - UAH 536 billion, in 2028 - UAH 457 billion, and in 2029 - UAH 430 billion.

The next decade will begin with a UAH 409 billion payment in 2030. In 2031, Ukraine will pay more than UAH 434 billion, and in 2032 - almost UAH 398 billion.

In 2033, UAH 347 billion will be spent on debt repayment; in 2034, more than UAH 316 billion. In 2035, the repayments will again exceed the psychological mark, reaching UAH 410 billion. In 2036, the repayment will decrease to UAH 285 billion. In 2037, UAH 318 billion will have to be paid.

Starting in 2038, annual payments will not exceed UAH 200 billion. For example, in 2038 - UAH 165 billion; in 2039 - UAH 158 billion; in 2040 - UAH 174 billion; in 2041 - UAH 125 billion. In 2042, payments are expected to peak at almost UAH 209 billion.

After that, the amounts will decrease again: UAH 113 billion in 2043; UAH 110 billion in 2044; UAH 107 billion in 2045; UAH 105 billion in 2046; and UAH 102 billion in 2047.

In 2048 and 2049, it is planned to pay UAH 87 billion each.

In total, over 26 years, Ukraine will have to pay off about UAH 8.5 trillion of public debt. This is about a trillion more than Ukraine's projected nominal GDP for 2024.

Of this amount, about UAH 3 trillion will be spent on interest payments, and UAH 5.5 trillion will be spent on the principal amount of the debt.

As you know, the expected state budget revenues for 2024 amount to almost UAH 1.8 trillion, which shows significant financial pressure on the country's economy. Therefore, the issues of effective public debt management and continued cooperation with international financial institutions remain critical to ensuring Ukraine's financial stability in the long term.
