The Dutch government has introduced new vehicle registration requirements for Ukrainians. This information was published on the government portal. Thus, according to the new requirements, all cars with Ukrainian registration must obtain Dutch license plates by March 4, 2025. The registration process includes several important stages and requires advance preparation of documents. We will tell you how to re-register a car in the article below.

The procedure for obtaining Dutch license plates for Ukrainians: step-by-step instructions

First of all, to register a vehicle, you must meet the following requirements:

● be registered with a municipality in the Netherlands;

● have a valid passport;

● be at least 18 years of age.

Step-by-step algorithm for re-registering a car

Step 1: BPM tax exemption

First of all, you need to apply for exemption from the tax on cars and motorcycles (BPM). This can be done through a special online form on the official website of the tax service. After submitting the application, you will receive a confirmation from the tax office.

Step 2: RDW technical inspection

The next step is to make an appointment for a technical inspection at the RDW. To pass the inspection, you must have:

● technical passport

● an identity document

● Certificate of conformity (desirable, but not required);

● a document on exemption from BPM.

More information on the rules of technical inspection can be found on the RDW website.

Step 3: Submitting the BPM declaration

After successfully passing the technical inspection, you need to submit a special declaration of speed. This can also be done via the online form. Once the declaration is processed, RDW will register your vehicle and issue a registration certificate.

Step 4: Obtaining license plates

After receiving the certificate, you can order the production of Dutch license plates. This can be done at specialized points. The addresses can be found on the official RDW website.

Step 5: Insurance

After installing the new license plates, you need to take out a local car insurance policy with an insurance agent.

Step 6: Paying the vehicle tax

After your car is registered with the RDW, the tax authorities will send you a tax bill (MRB). A few weeks later, you will receive a direct debit authorization form for the MRB. You can fill out and return this form if you want the tax authorities to automatically debit the MRB from your account.

Peculiarities of technical inspection for cars older than 3 years

If your vehicle is more than 3 years old (for gasoline vehicles - more than 4 years old) and you have not received a technical inspection report from RDW, you must make an appointment for a mandatory technical inspection at one of RDW's certified car repair shops. You can find the nearest address on the RDW website.
