RequestGood afternoon, I would like to contact you to clarify some information regarding the stay of Ukrainians in Georgia. Do I understand correctly that I can stay in Georgia for about 3 years? And if I travel outside the country and then return, will this somehow affect my stay here? Thank you in advance!

1. How long can a non-resident stay in Georgia without a visa?

2. Can I travel outside the country during this period? Let's say I live in Georgia for a year and then leave for 1-3 months. When I return to the country, will there be any problems? And do I understand correctly that after that my period of residence without a visa is extended?

3. When the period of residence without a visa expires, what do I have to do to continue living here? And can I live here again for the same period as a non-resident? What do I have to do for this? For example, do I need to leave the country for a certain period of time to do this (for example, like in the EU countries - you need to be outside of 180 days to renew your stay there without a visa)?

So, how long can Ukrainians stay in Georgia without a visa and how to extend this period? This is the answer our client received:

How long can a non-resident stay in Georgia without a visa?

Citizens of Ukraine can stay in Georgia without a visa for up to one year. This is provided for by the agreement between Ukraine and Georgia on visa-free travel. After one year, certain measures must be taken to extend the legal stay.

Can I travel outside the country during this period?

Yes, you can leave and return from Georgia without any restrictions during the year of your stay. If, for example, you have lived in Georgia for a year and then left for 1-3 months and returned, your one-year stay is not automatically “renewed”. Your “visa-free” possibility is extended within the allowed year, which is counted from the date of your last entry.

When my visa-free stay expires, what should I do to continue living here?

If you want to stay in Georgia after the end of the allowed one-year period, you have several options:

1. Apply for a temporary residence permit: you can apply for a residence permit at the Civil Service Agency of Georgia. The grounds for a residence permit may include work, study, business or other reasons.

2. Exercise the “visa corridor”: after one year, you can leave the country (for example, to neighboring Turkey or Armenia) and return to Georgia. This will allow you to stay in the country for another year. There is no 180-day rule in Georgia, as in EU countries. However, abusing frequent entries and exits may attract the attention of the border services.

3. Obtain a residence permit: if you plan to stay for a long period of time, you should consider obtaining a residence permit based on employment, real estate ownership or other circumstances.

Do I need to leave for a certain period of time to renew my stay?

After one year of visa-free stay, you need to leave the territory of Georgia for at least a short period of time. After that, you can re-enter and start a new year of visa-free stay.

Important to know

● According to Georgian law, every foreigner who stays in the country for more than 30 days must register his or her place of residence. This can be done through an electronic service or at a branch of the Civil Service Agency.

● Always keep documents that confirm your legal status in the country with you.

● If you have any additional questions or difficulties, we recommend that you contact the migration services of Georgia.
