E-cigarettes and e-liquids have become an integral part of many travellers' lives. However, before you hit the road, it is important to familiarise yourself with the rules for transporting these devices across international borders. In this article, we will tell you what is allowed, what restrictions apply, and which countries may prohibit the import of ‘electronics’.

Legislative features

Transporting e-cigarettes across borders depends on the laws of the destination country. Although most countries allow the transportation of e-cigarettes for personal use, there are certain quantitative restrictions, as well as nuances related to the transportation of e-liquids. It is always recommended to study the rules and customs regulations of the country you are travelling to before you travel.

Permitted quantity

According to the current legislation, the following quantities of devices and liquids can be transported at one time:

▪️ Electronic cigarettes: up to 2 pieces.

▪️ E-liquid:

- By land - up to 10 millilitres.

- By air and sea - up to 50 millilitres.

These restrictions are intended to ensure that devices and e-liquids are used solely for personal use and not for commercial activities.

Prohibited and restricted countries

Despite the fact that most countries allow the importation of e-cigarettes, subject to the established regulations, there are states where the importation of these devices is either limited or completely prohibited:

Countries with severe restrictions

Thailand: Some of the strictest rules apply here - violations can lead to fines or even imprisonment for up to 10 years for serious violations.

Singapore: In this country, the possession, storage, and use of e-cigarettes are subject to fines of up to $1500.

Other countries where importation of vapes is prohibited:

Gambia, North Korea, India, Laos, Vatican City, Cambodia, Qatar, Nicaragua, Lebanon, Syria, Lebanon, Cambodia, Australia.

It should also be noted that in some countries, bans do not apply to sales and imports, but rather to personal use. For example, in Turkey, the import of e-cigarettes is prohibited, but this rule does not apply to tourists.

Peculiarities of transporting e-cigarettes across the Polish border

Ukrainian vapers are often interested in the issue of transporting disposable e-cigarettes across the Polish border. According to local legislation, e-cigarettes are considered to be tobacco products, which means that their importation is allowed only for personal consumption and in small quantities. Therefore, before travelling to Poland, you should make sure that you are transporting the device within the permissible limits.

When planning a trip abroad, it is important to keep in mind that governments of different countries have different approaches to the issue of transporting e-cigarettes. In most cases, you are allowed to carry devices for personal use, but with clear restrictions on the amount of both e-cigarettes and e-liquids. Violation of the rules can result not only in fines but also in criminal liability in some countries.

Before travelling, we recommend that you:

1. Study the customs regulations of the destination country.

2. Prepare documents and make sure that the amount of transported devices and liquids complies with the established standards.

3. Monitor changes in legislation, as the rules may be updated.

4. Following these recommendations will help you avoid unpleasant situations and make your trip as comfortable and safe as possible.

It should also be remembered that when travelling abroad in your own car, drivers must have a valid international insurance policy (Green Card). Apply for a policy on the Visit Ukraine portal in a few clicks.
