Ukraine and Romania have agreed to implement a joint infrastructure project that should significantly facilitate border crossing in the Porubne-Siret direction. The project involves the construction of a new high-speed road in Romania and the comprehensive modernization of access infrastructure on the Ukrainian side.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Development of Communities and Territories of Ukraine. The project aims to increase the capacity of one of the key border crossing points between Ukraine and the EU and is being implemented with the support of the European Union.

Financing and format of the project

The construction of the new road and the upgrade of the existing infrastructure will be financed by the EU under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) mechanism. This instrument provides funding for strategic projects that strengthen the security, logistics, and transport resilience of European countries, particularly at the EU's external borders.

The Ministry of Development emphasizes that the development of border infrastructure is critically important not only for freight transit but also for private travel, in particular for Ukrainians who regularly cross the border by car.

What road will be built in Romania

In Romania, the project involves the construction of the Suceava-Siret expressway, which will become part of the A7 motorway. The new section will have direct access to the Ukrainian border, which will reduce travel time and ease congestion on local roads.

Thanks to its integration with Romania's national motorway network, the route will become more predictable and convenient for both passenger and freight transport.

What will change on the Ukrainian side

A key element of the project is the development of access infrastructure on the Ukrainian side, as it directly affects the throughput capacity of the Porubne-Siret border crossing point.

In particular, the following is planned:

● expansion of the Ukrainian section of the road from the border in the direction of Chernivtsi to two lanes in each direction;

● synchronization of access roads and logistics solutions with the new Suceava-Siret (A7) expressway on Romanian territory;

● preparing the infrastructure for the increase in traffic flows expected after the completion of construction.

The ministry emphasizes that a comprehensive approach will avoid “bottlenecks” at the border, where the modern road on one side meets outdated or overloaded infrastructure on the other.

Expansion of the Porubne checkpoint

In parallel with the road works, the expansion of the Porubne checkpoint for freight transport is already underway. By the end of the year, it is planned to increase its capacity through reconstruction and an increase in the number of lanes.

These changes are expected to have a positive impact not only on international logistics but also on private travel, particularly for Ukrainians traveling to EU countries in their own cars.
