A travel permit to the EU does not guarantee automatic entry: what control procedures to expect

The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) envisages that all visitors to EU countries outside the EU will have to register online in advance. In particular, starting from mid-2024, Ukrainians, like other foreigners, will be required to obtain a travel authorization to enter the EU. Learn more about how ETIAS will work

Starting in mid-2024, Ukrainian citizens will have to obtain a special permit to enter the European Union. Such rules are related to the introduction of the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). It is reported by schengenvisainfo.com.

Ukraine is included in the list of more than 60 countries whose citizens will be required to obtain the document.

First of all, it is important to note that an approved entry request does not guarantee unimpeded entry into the EU. Potential travelers must also meet the conditions of the visa-free regime.

The European Union emphasizes that in addition to the presentation of valid documents and ETIAS at border control, border services may require additional information, such as

- length of stay in Europe;

- the purpose of the visit;

- explanation of financial means for travel.

In addition, the border services will check whether the documents are valid for at least 3 months after the estimated date of departure from the EU country requiring ETIAS.

It will also check whether travel documents have not expired more than 10 years ago.

The government has the right to conduct a thorough check to ensure the legitimacy of the documents. Services may also conduct checks to determine whether certain third-country nationals pose a threat to public safety.

To obtain an ETIAS, you need to pay 7 euros. The permit will remain valid for 3 years or until the applicant's passport expires.

Launch of the ETIAS system: how it will work

After the implementation of ETIAS, information about travelers will be stored in the entry/exit system. Instead of stamps in passports at the EU's external borders, the system will record the date and place of entry, as well as store a photo and fingerprints.

It is important to remember that "for travelers who do not meet the conditions of entry, entry may be denied unless an exception provided for by law applies," the EU emphasizes.

After entering the EU, you can travel freely in Europe, but it is important to adhere to the maximum stay of 90 days within 180 days.
