Ukraine wants to simplify citizenship for military spouses: details

Ukraine has decided to simplify the process of obtaining citizenship for the wives or husbands of military personnel, according to a bill signed by the president. Foreigners will be able to submit a declaration of renunciation of foreign citizenship when they obtain a Ukrainian passport. Find out what else the bill provides for and what changes it introduces
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a new draft law No. 12032 aimed at simplifying the process of obtaining Ukrainian citizenship for spouses of military personnel. This is an important innovation, which, according to lawmakers, will be a significant step in the realisation of the right to citizenship for family members of the country's defenders.

Main provisions of the draft law
According to the information published on the website of the Verkhovna Rada, the draft law provides that wives and husbands of Ukrainian military personnel will be able to submit a declaration of renunciation of foreign citizenship when applying for Ukrainian citizenship. This decision is intended to encourage closer integration of military families into Ukrainian society and facilitate their legalisation in the country.
In the event of the death of a serviceman in the line of duty, the same right will be granted to the spouses of the deceased. This important provision is aimed at supporting families who have suffered a loss in the line of duty in the name of the country's security.

Additional support measures
In addition to simplifying the procedure for obtaining citizenship, the draft law also contains the following initiatives:
- Establishment of quotas for family reunification. The new immigration quotas will allow foreigners who want to reunite with their military spouses to obtain entry and residence permits in Ukraine more easily and quickly.
- Restoration of citizenship. The second spouse of married couples who is a foreigner and participated in the defence of Ukraine will be able to restore Ukrainian citizenship. This provision is aimed at integrating those who have made a personal contribution to the defence of the country, even if their citizenship has been lost or changed for any reason.
