The history of the Lavra is fascinating

The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is not just a monastery, it is a living history book, where every stone bears the imprint of past centuries. Its history began in 1051, when the monk Anthony, returning from Athos, settled in caves on the banks of the Dnipro River. His ascetic life attracted followers, and soon a small monastic community was formed.

The first monks lived in the caves, from which the name of the Lavra comes. These caves became the place of their prayers, work and burials. Later, Anthony was joined by Theodosius, who introduced a strict statute based on the rules of the Athos monasteries. The Lavra developed rapidly, thanks to the support of princes and donations from the faithful.

In the XI-XIII centuries, the Lavra became one of the most important spiritual centres of Kyivan Rus. Chroniclers, icon painters, and doctors worked here, and education developed. The monastery survived the attacks of the Polovtsians, Mongol-Tatars, and Lithuanians, but always revived. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the monastery acquired the status of a monastery, which underlined its special significance. At that time, many new churches were built, including the Assumption Cathedral, the Trinity Gate Church, and the Great Lavra Bell Tower.

In the 1920s, the Soviet government closed the monastery and transferred its buildings to museums. During the Second World War, the Assumption Cathedral was destroyed. In 1988, on the eve of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus, the monastery was restored. In 1994, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2023, during the Russian-Ukrainian war, the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was once again in the spotlight.

The Lavra played a huge role in the development of ancient Russian culture. Masterpieces such as the Tale of Bygone Years, the Kyiv Cave Paternik, and icons of the Cave Saints were created here. The Lavra became the burial place of many prominent figures, including Metropolitan Petro Mohyla and Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi.

Assumption Cathedral

The Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra is the heart of the monastery, its spiritual centre, which has been a witness to the history of Ukraine for centuries. Its construction began in 1073, when St Theodosius of the Caves and Prince Sviatoslav Yaroslavovych laid the foundation stone of the future church. It became the first stone building on the territory of the Lavra, symbolising its growing role in the spiritual life of Kyivan Rus. Throughout its history, the cathedral was repeatedly destroyed, but each time it rose from the ashes, demonstrating the indomitable spirit. The destruction of the cathedral during the Second World War was particularly tragic, when it was blown up in 1941. However, in 2000, on the occasion of the 950th anniversary of the Lavra's foundation, the cathedral was fully restored, becoming a symbol of the revival of spirituality and national memory. Today, the Assumption Cathedral impresses with its grandeur and beauty; it is a masterpiece of Ukrainian Baroque, decorated with golden domes and elegant facades. Its interior, filled with luxury and sanctity, attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists who seek to feel connected to the history and spirituality of this place.

Near and Far Caves

The Near and Far Caves of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra are not just underground passages, but the true heart of the monastery, where monastic life in Rus was born. The Nearer Caves, also known as the Anthony Caves, are the place where the founder of the monastery, St Anthony, settled. These caves are a labyrinth of narrow corridors where the relics of saints rest in niches. There is a special atmosphere of peace and solitude here, which allows you to feel the spirit of the first monks.

The Far Caves, or Theodosius Caves, are located a little further from the centre of the Lavra. They were founded by St Theodosius, a disciple of Anthony. The Far Caves differ from the Near Caves in the greater length and complexity of the labyrinth. They also house the relics of saints and have an underground church.

The Refectory Church of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, consecrated in honour of the Monks Anthony and Theodosius, is a unique architectural monument that combines the functions of a church and a refectory for monks. Its history goes back centuries, as the need for such a building arose in the early stages of the monastery's development. The modern building we see today was erected in the late 19th century, replacing the previous structure that has not survived to this day. The architectural style of the Refectory Church reflects Byzantine traditions, which is felt in its monumentality and solemnity. A special feature of the church is the huge domed hall, which has no internal supports, creating the impression of space and lightness. The interior decoration is striking in its beauty and elegance, and the paintings on the walls tell of important events in the history of the monastery and the lives of the saints. The refectory church is not only a place of worship, but also plays an important role in the life of the monastery community, where monks gather for a common meal.

Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine
