Who needs insurance to enter the Netherlands?

Tourists. For short-term trips, including tourist trips, insurance is mandatory. It allows you to cover the costs of medical care in case of illness or accident during your stay in the Netherlands. Visitors planning a trip of up to 90 days must have a policy that meets the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. It is worth noting that the Netherlands is tightening border controls. Read what travellers should know here.

Students. For people coming to the Netherlands to study, insurance is a prerequisite for obtaining a visa. In addition to compulsory health insurance, students must have policies that cover medical expenses throughout the Netherlands and include coverage for accidents, illnesses and hospitalisations.

Employees. If you plan to work in the Netherlands, you will also need to take out health insurance. For working Dutch residents, this is insurance provided by the state system. However, for those who stay in the country temporarily, for example, on a contract basis, insurance is mandatory. We tell you how to apply for a work visa to the Netherlands while abroad here.

Travelling on a visa-free basis. If you are travelling on a visa-free basis within the Schengen area, insurance is not mandatory, but highly recommended. The policy will allow you to avoid large expenses for treatment if necessary, as medical services can be quite expensive.

Local insurance for refugees. If you are granted refugee status in the Netherlands, the country provides health insurance for people who do not have other sources of insurance. However, this insurance is limited to the territory of the Netherlands and does not cover the costs of treatment abroad.

General requirements for insurance policies for short and long term trips

The Schengen area sets general requirements for policies that must cover a minimum of €30,000 for medical treatment, including hospitalisation, evacuation if necessary, and repatriation.

For short-term trips, the policy must cover the entire period of stay in the Netherlands, including additional medical expenses.

For long-term trips, such as study or work, the requirements may be stricter. The policy must cover not only emergency medical care, but also the costs of treating chronic illnesses or psychological care.

What kind of insurance can I get in the Netherlands?

Local insurance. The Netherlands offers local insurance for people who plan to stay in the country for a long period of time (for example, to work or study). However, this option has some limitations, such as high cost and lack of coverage outside the Netherlands. Therefore, for those who plan to travel or stay in other countries, such insurance will not be sufficient.

Obtaining insurance through Ukrainian insurers. Many Ukrainian insurance companies provide the opportunity to take out insurance for travelling to the Netherlands that meets the requirements of the Schengen Agreement. This allows you to obtain a policy that covers medical expenses throughout the Schengen area, which is a convenient option for tourists or businessmen planning to travel between different countries.
