Church marriage instead of the registry office

In Poland, it is not necessary to go to the registry office to get married — it is enough to get married in a church. Such a union has the same legal force as a civil one, and after the wedding, the spouses receive all the rights and obligations provided by law.

Borscht from a coffee machine

Polish borscht is very different from what Ukrainians are used to. It is a light beetroot broth served with small dumplings, usually with mushrooms or meat. The most unusual thing is that in some places you can buy it... from a regular coffee machine and drink it from a paper cup.

Love for animals

In Poland, they take incredible care of domestic animals. In summer, bowls of water are placed near shops, and bags and bins for cleaning are placed in parks, and there are almost no stray animals here. The eco-patrol catches strays, treats them, vaccinates them and looks for owners for them. There is even a humorous urinal for dogs in Warsaw.

Winter smog

Winter is not the best time to travel: many cities are shrouded in smog. The reason for this is the old heating systems that run on coal and wood. Despite the efforts of the authorities, the problem remains relevant.

A minute's silence on 1 August

Every year at 5 p.m., Warsaw comes to a standstill. Sirens, cars, pedestrians — everything stops for a minute in memory of the heroes of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. If you happen to be in the capital at this time, don't be alarmed, it's a touching national tradition.

Very loud sirens

Polish ambulances, police cars and fire engines emit a deafening sound. This is done on purpose — so that they can be heard from afar and drivers have time to clear the road. It is believed that the loudness reminds citizens where their taxes are going.

No shopping on Sundays

Poles are deeply religious. On Sundays, most people go to church, and shops and shopping centres are closed. Since the 2020s, there has been a law in the country prohibiting trade on Sundays, with rare exceptions.

Polish cuisine — a feast for the stomach

The portions here are huge, and the dishes are hearty and delicious: pork stewed in beer, stuffed cabbage rolls, dumplings with meat and mushrooms, pork knuckle, tripe. In many cafes, the main course is served with a side dish — once you try it, you will definitely not leave hungry.

Movies without dubbing

Most films in Polish cinemas are shown in their original language with Polish subtitles. The only exceptions are children's cartoons and films for children.

Travel for pennies

Poles are passionate travellers. It is easy to get around the country on cheap buses and trains, with tickets available for as little as a few zlotys. Low-cost flights across Europe start at €1, making Poland a convenient base for budget travel.

Artificial palm tree in the centre of Warsaw

At the intersection of Charles de Gaulle Avenue and Jerusalem Alleys stands a giant artificial palm tree — an art project by artist Joanna Rajkowska. Initially a temporary installation in 2002, it has become a permanent symbol of the capital and a popular meeting place.

Quiet holidays

During religious holidays, Poland seems to die out: shops and cafes close, and the streets empty. Poles spend these days with their families or in churches. Tourists should take this into account when planning their trip so as not to be left alone with the ‘closed doors’ of establishments.

It is important to take care of your own comfort and safety: before leaving Ukraine, it is recommended to take out insurance for traveling abroad.
