On May 9, Europe celebrates one of the most important and symbolic holidays - Europe Day. This is not just a date on the calendar, but a reminder of the path that European states have taken from destruction and conflicts to unity, cooperation and common values. For Ukraine, this day has a special meaning: it reflects not only the political course, but also a deep desire to be part of the European community.

How did the “Europe Day” holiday appear?
After World War II, Europe found itself in a state of deep economic and political crisis. The continent, exhausted by conflicts, needed a new model of coexistence that would make it impossible to repeat the tragedies of the past. It was then that the idea of unification, based not on rivalry, but on cooperation, appeared.
The French politician Robert Schuman played a key role in this process. On May 9, 1950, he made a historic initiative that went down in history as the Schuman Declaration. It proposed creating a common system for managing the coal and steel industries, industries that at that time were the basis of the military power of states.
The idea had a profound meaning: the pooling of strategic resources was supposed to make war between European countries not only undesirable, but also practically impossible. Already in 1951, the Paris Agreement was signed, which established the European Coal and Steel Community. The co-founders were France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg. The agreement entered into force in 1952 and was valid until 2002. It was the first step towards the creation of the modern European Union.

How did Europe Day become an official holiday?
The idea of unity gradually transformed into real political and economic structures. In 1964, the Council of Europe first recognized Europe Day as a holiday, and in 1985, the Milan summit officially established the date of May 9 as a symbol of European integration.
Since then, this day has been celebrated every year in EU countries as a reminder of common values - peace, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights. Europe Day has also become one of the symbols of the European Union, along with the flag, the anthem "Ode to Joy" by Ludwig van Beethoven and the single currency.
Celebrations in different countries have their own characteristics: from official ceremonies in Brussels and Strasbourg to cultural festivals, open days of institutions and educational events. But the main idea remains the same - to show that unity in diversity is the basis of stability and development.

The meaning of the holiday “Europe Day” for Ukraine
In Ukraine, Europe Day began to be celebrated back in 2003, but for a long time it was rather symbolic and was celebrated on the second weekend of May. The situation changed in 2023, when the date of the celebration was synchronized with the European Union – May 9.
This step became an important signal: Ukraine is not just declaring a European choice, but is consistently integrating into the common political, legal and cultural space of Europe. After signing the Association Agreement and receiving the status of candidate for EU membership, European integration has become a key direction of state policy.
Today, Europe Day for Ukrainians is not only about history or diplomacy. It is about the values that the country defends: freedom, dignity, democracy and the right to one’s own choice. In modern conditions, this holiday takes on an even deeper meaning, because it symbolizes the desire for peace and a common future with European states.
The European Union is discussing an unprecedented scenario of rapprochement with Ukraine that could change the very logic of EU enlargement. Read here how the concept could work and why 2027 is being called a potential date for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
Europe is a symbol of unity
Europe is much more than a geographical space. It is a common idea that unites countries around the principles of mutual respect, cooperation and responsibility. That is why Europe Day is not only a historical date, but also a reminder that unity is important and that it is what helps to get through the most difficult times.
This holiday demonstrates that different cultures, languages and traditions can not only coexist, but also strengthen each other, creating a strong and stable community.
