Today, April 5, Orthodox Christians celebrate one of the brightest and most important feasts of the spring cycle—Palm Sunday. In the church calendar, this day is known as the Lord’s Entry into Jerusalem. It has deep spiritual significance, combining a celebration of life, inner renewal, and preparation for the main Christian event—Easter.

Along with festive joy, this day carries important traditions and strict folk prohibitions that help purify one’s thoughts before the start of Holy Week.

Palm Sunday: Significance for Believers

For Christians, this holiday symbolizes the recognition of Jesus Christ as the Savior. According to the Gospel, when Christ entered Jerusalem, people joyfully welcomed him, lining the road with palm branches. In our part of the world, where palm trees do not grow, they have been replaced by willow branches. It is the first tree to bloom after a harsh winter, so it has become the perfect symbol of life’s victory over death and of spring’s rebirth.

The Church calls on believers to devote today to prayer, rest, and spending time with family, consciously setting aside all worldly and mundane concerns.

Main prohibitions of the holiday

All restrictions of Palm Sunday are intended to help a person detach from worldly matters and focus on their inner state.

First and foremost, heavy physical labor is strictly prohibited today. One must completely refrain from working the land: digging, planting, sowing, or pruning trees. The day is intended exclusively for spiritual work.

It is also important to put aside household chores. People have long believed that any heavy housework on such a major holiday drives away good fortune. Therefore, laundry, deep cleaning, sewing, knitting, and repairs should be postponed to other days.

Special attention is paid to the purity of thoughts and words: on this holiday, one must not quarrel or use foul language. Palm Sunday is a time of peace and harmony. It is forbidden to swear, provoke conflicts, harbor resentment, or wish ill upon anyone. This day should be filled with tranquility and sincere reconciliation.

Additionally, you shouldn’t refuse to help others today. It is believed that on this bright holiday, hearts should be open to mercy. It is important to do good deeds, be generous, give alms, and support those in need.

How to handle blessed willow branches

Special attention on this day is given to the main symbol of the holiday—willow branches. After being blessed in the church, they take on special significance, so under no circumstances should they be thrown in the trash or trampled.

It is customary to bring the blessed branches home and place them near icons.

It is believed that they serve as a powerful talisman and protect the home from misfortune, illness, and evil thoughts throughout the year. Old branches, kept from the previous year, are bid farewell with respect: they cannot simply be thrown away, so traditionally they are burned, set adrift on a river, or returned to the church.
