Mandatory learning of the Latvian language and support: what changes await Ukrainians in Latvia from 2023
In Latvia, changes have been adopted that concern refugees from Ukraine, who have found refuge in Latvia since the beginning of the full-scale war and have found work in the country. In particular, the deadline for providing assistance to Ukrainians was extended, and they were required to learn the Latvian language.
For what period was the support of Ukrainian refugees in Latvia extended?
The Commission of the Latvian Seimas on Defense, Internal Affairs and Prevention of Corruption adopted amendments to the law providing for support for Ukrainians.
According to the new edition, refugees from Ukraine will be assisted until June 30, 2023.
Previously, the law provided for support until the end of 2022. In particular, for those who need housing, Latvia will provide a place to live until the end of June next year.
Obligation to learn the Latvian language for employed citizens of Ukraine in Latvia
An important change was the compulsory study of the Latvian language. This decision applies only to those who are officially employed, and will enter into force on January 1, 2024. Currently, the legislation does not oblige refugees to know the state language of Latvia.
It is worth noting that such an innovation is not approved by the Association for Aid to Refugees. Representatives say a similar commitment eludes other groups. Besides, not all Ukrainians will be able to learn the language.
In addition, the association noted that the first priority is to ensure accessibility to language courses, because there is a demand for them among Ukrainians.
