According to the Duolingo application, in 2022 there was a surge among those who wanted to know the Ukrainian language. Demand is observed even in countries far from us
The full-scale war put Ukraine on the front pages of the world media. Many people who previously knew almost nothing about our country became interested in Ukrainian culture, art and traditions. In particular, many foreigners began to learn Ukrainian to show us solidarity. Mobile language learning app Duolingo has published a report and presented the language trends of 2022.
The Ukrainian language is the biggest trend of 2022
According to Duolingo, this year there was a surge among people who want to learn Ukrainian: more than 1.3 million people started learning it.
It is interesting that there is a significant demand for Ukrainian in countries far from us - Argentina, Japan, Vietnam.
The report also mentions the states that accepted Ukrainian refugees. For example, compared to last year, the number of Ukrainian learners increased by 1,651% in Germany, by 1,615% in Poland, and by 1,515% in the Czech Republic.
Rating of the popularity of Ukrainian in the world
According to Duolingo, the Ukrainian language has improved its position among the most popular languages in Great Britain and the United States.
In the United Kingdom, our language ranks 17th, although last year it was 37th. In the United States, the demand for learning Ukrainian rose to 22nd place compared to 36th last year.
Why has the Ukrainian language become so popular?
Of course, the surge in popularity of our language is due to the war and coverage of events in all world media. The issue of language has always been a cornerstone of Ukraine's cultural and political agenda, so this topic could not escape the news about Ukraine. The mass media compared Ukrainian and Russian and talked about the attitude of Ukrainians to these languages. It is not surprising that the curiosity of foreigners began to grow.
Analysts of Duolingo point to another reason for its popularity – its similarity to English, despite the use of Cyrillic characters.
At the end of the day, no matter what reasons foreigners are guided by, we are glad that the popularity of Ukraine and everything Ukrainian continues to grow.
