What is Ukraine's place in the ranking of tolerance towards LGBT people among European countries?
Inhaltsübersicht
Every year, the international organization ILGA publishes a ranking of countries by the level of tolerance towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. Find out which country topped the ranking, what place Ukraine took, and which countries do not protect the rights of LGBT people at all
ILGA, an international association that fights for the observance of human rights of the LGBTQ+ community, has published a new rating, where each country received from 0 to 100% depending on the level of tolerance for LGBT people.
The ranking is based on laws and regulations in place in the country that directly affect the quality of life. In particular, the principles of legislation on equality, non-discrimination, the ability to start a family, etc.
The most tolerant countries in Europe for LGBT people
The ranking includes 49 countries in total. The absolute leader in terms of tolerance is Malta with a score of 90.29%. The top five countries are: Belgium (77.37%) and Denmark (76.54%), Spain (74.10%), Finland (70.62%) and Iceland (70.62%).
Ukraine ranked 39th in the ranking with a score of 20.16%, ahead of Bulgaria (19.86%), Romania (18.11%) and Poland (15.05%).
At the same time, the worst indicators were recorded in: Belarus (12.06%), russia (8.45%), Armenia (9.41%), Turkey (4.00%) and Azerbaijan (2.41%).
Along with the ranking, the organization traditionally provided a report detailing all the negative and positive social phenomena related to LGBTQ+ issues in each country.
Thus, among the most important events in Ukraine that have occurred recently, the report noted the ratification of the Istanbul Convention in June 2022, as well as Volodymyr Zelenskyy's appeal to the Prime Minister to consider granting legal recognition to same-sex couples after the relevant petition crossed the threshold of 25 thousand signatures.
Among the negative factors in the report are Oleksiy Arestovych's statements about LGBT people, in particular, his calling them "people with deviation" and homophobic statements by the mayor of Ivano-Frankivsk, Ruslan Martsinkiv.
We remind you! Every year in June, the world celebrates LGBT Pride Month. Read more about which well-known Ukrainian companies supported the LGBT community this year in our previous article.
