Incredible Polissia: a week in Volyn with Masha Sebova

Polissya has a unique culture, which is primarily due to its natural and geographical conditions. The world in Volyn revolves around lakes - one could even say that these natural objects are the highlight of the region. Lakes here can be almost private or stretch for many kilometres and connect neighbouring villages. Learn more about the incredible Polissia with new recommendations from You Tube blogger Masha Sebova

There are more than 220 lakes and 130 rivers in Volyn (and the Volyn region in particular). It is also home to the deepest lake in Ukraine, Svityaz. The world of Polissya revolves around lakes - there are both private small lakes and long lakes that replace communication routes. Most of the tourist attractions here are of natural origin, and the region's culture is unique and inimitable. Polissya is associated with many famous figures, including the world-famous Lesya Ukrainka. Special attention should be paid to the hospitable residents who are happy to welcome strangers and introduce them to the traditions and customs of the incredible Polissia. Visit Ukraine specialists have watched a new video from You Tube blogger Masha Sebova, who spent a week (!) in Volyn and tells her viewers about the region. Read the article to find out what places in Polissya the blogger recommends everyone to visit.

Expedition to the Prypiat-Stokhid National Nature Park

‘Prypiat-Stokhid is located in the far north of Ukraine, almost on the border. It was created quite recently - only at the end of the last century - but has been impressing visitors for decades. First of all, the park has a unique flora - about 40 species of local plants are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine, and the marshy terrain has allowed local trees to grow to the heavens.

The park administration is located in the village of Lyubyshche. All excursions to Prypiat and Stokhid are organised there. Usually, the tour starts from Lake Liubyaz, but in recent years the water level has dropped significantly, so the tour route has been slightly changed.

Please note: This is a border area with checkpoints and inspections, so you should have all the necessary documents with you.

The administration offers different types of excursions, but Masha chose the one involving rafting on the Prypiat River. The blogger calls it a tour ‘for the lazy’. The river will take her as far as the Rivne region, admire the floodplains, make a wish to see all the local fauna and learn about the culture of Polissia. Masha Sebova recommends visiting this place in the morning, while the animals (fauna) have not yet gone to bed.

Lakes in Volyn are considered one of the natural wonders of Ukraine for a reason . You can learn more about them in the material of Visit Ukraine.

Lake Nobel and the fortifications of the First World War

Lake Nobel is located in the Rivne region and is shaped like a heart. It is here that the Prypiat River ends its journey in Ukraine and heads to Belarus. Of course, there are many recreation areas for tourists on the shores of the lake. However, if you take the Pripyat River descent, you will feel as if civilisation is thousands of kilometres away.

There are also fortifications from the First World War. In 1916, the front line passed along the Prypiat River and this place was strategically important, so the fortifications have remained since then. They are unguarded - anyone can visit them. Masha Sebova says that for being 100 years old, the fortifications are very well preserved.

The cost of the tour is 5000 UAH, which is divided by the number of expedition participants.

The village of Toykut

The blogger is greeted by a deer named Senia, who is known to everyone here. The local celebrity happily greets tourists and even lets them pet him. In the village, the reindeer have an entire forest - a huge area where they can move freely.

A little further on, tourists are greeted by donkeys, who also happily come to the hand. Masha Sebova says that this place qualifies for the status of a petting zoo, because you can even feed the animals!

By the way, there is also a small hotel complex ‘Toykutchany’ with a farm, a pond and several houses. The design of the houses is interesting, they are made of oiled wooden logs. This is a reflection of the local culture - the blogger says that she has seen this for the first time.

All visitors enjoy the views and the scent of pine needles, and the smell of the forest can be felt even in hotel rooms. There is also perhaps the only bathing tub in the region - at least, the blogger says she hasn't found any others.

You can book a tour of the magical Polissia here. For those who love fantastic stories and old legends!

You canlearn more about the traditions of the northern region by booking a special tour from Visit Ukraine.
