Recently, it became known that new traffic rules will come into effect in early November. Find out more about the speed limits and what motorists can expect in the near future
From the beginning of November 2024, Ukraine will undergo a change in road traffic regulation. What Ukrainian drivers should expect is described in the article below.
Changes to traffic rules: speed limits
Oleksiy Biloshitsky, First Deputy Head of the Patrol Police Department, announced the introduction of a new speed limit in all cities across the country. From 1 November, the maximum permitted speed will be 50 km/h.

Reasons for the new speed limit
It is important to note that these changes are not the result of a modification of the traffic rules. Instead, they reflect the transition to the so-called ‘winter period’. This period is characterised by an increased level of danger for all road users, which necessitates the introduction of stricter speed limits.
Implementation of the new speed limit involves replacing road signs on certain road sections in different cities of Ukraine. In particular, new signs will be installed where previously speeds of up to 80 km/h were permitted, with a limit of 50 km/h.
Speed limits in settlements: specifics of application in different cities
Biloshytskyi noted that in some cities, such as Kyiv and Dnipro, certain road sections, where it was justified in terms of safety and road conditions, previously had higher speed limits of up to 80 km/h during the summer. With the onset of the winter period, these temporary permits are cancelled and the standard 50 km/h speed limit comes into effect.
Thus, although the traffic rules remain formally unchanged, in fact, there is a seasonal adaptation of speed limits. This change is aimed at improving road safety in winter, when the risks to road users increase. Drivers are advised to be especially careful and adhere to the new speed limits to ensure safety on the roads.
