Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi has summarised the Ukrainian army’s operations in May. According to him, despite constant pressure from the enemy, Ukrainian defenders are not only successfully holding their ground but are also seizing the initiative, inflicting significant losses on the enemy both on the front line and deep in the rear.
How much territory have the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated since the start of the year
The situation on the front line remains complex and extremely dynamic. However, the results of the Defence Forces’ active operations speak for themselves: in May, the balance between liberated and temporarily lost territories stood at around +100 square kilometres in Ukraine’s favour.
Overall, according to official data from the Commander-in-Chief, since the start of this year the Ukrainian military has managed to de-occupy over 600 square kilometres of their homeland.

The situation on the front line today: where the fiercest battles are taking place
Russian troops continue their attempts to break through the defences in the east and south of the country, which has led to a significant increase in the number of combat engagements. Oleksandr Syrskyi emphasised that the most intense and fiercest fighting is currently taking place in the Pokrovsk, Oleksandrivka and Huliaipole sectors.
However, in certain sectors of the front, the Ukrainian army is confidently maintaining the initiative. Short- and medium-range weapons (Front and Middle) continue to systematically destroy Russian command posts and arsenals, depriving the enemy of its offensive capabilities.
Russian losses: drone strikes and colossal damage to the economy
The May report pays particular attention to the effectiveness of unmanned systems and long-range strikes. UAV units have demonstrated impressive results: in a month, they struck over 88,000 targets and neutralised over 30,500 Russian servicemen.
Deep strike operations also inflicted serious damage on the aggressor’s military machine. Over the course of the month, 111 facilities belonging to the military-industrial complex, the energy sector and the fuel infrastructure serving the Russian Federation’s army were successfully struck. According to the command’s estimates, the direct and indirect economic damage to Russia as a result of these strikes amounted to approximately $1.058 billion. Moreover, for the first time as part of a single operation, a series of successful attacks was carried out on strategic targets directly within the territory of Moscow and the Moscow Region, confirming the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ ability to strike the enemy far behind the front line.
Security in the Black Sea
In addition to successes on land and in the air, the Ukrainian Navy continues to reliably ensure the safety of civilian shipping.
Throughout May, the Navy carried out around 1,500 operations to protect sea lanes in the combat zone. This enabled 633 merchant vessels to be safely escorted to the ports of ‘Greater Odesa’ and onto the Danube, ensuring the stable operation of Ukrainian maritime exports.
Reminder! Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sent an open letter to the Russian leader setting out a concrete plan to end the war. The letter details the losses incurred, the conditions for a ceasefire and the ‘all for all’ prisoner exchange format. Find out where these historic talks might take place.
