The Ukrainian new car market in 2026 reflects a shift in drivers’ preferences. Despite the rapid growth of electric vehicles, cars with traditional engines—gasoline and diesel—are once again in highest demand. At the same time, hybrids continue to gain ground, while the share of electric vehicles has declined significantly.

This was reported by Ukravtoprom after analyzing the structure of passenger car sales in April 2026.

Which cars do Ukrainians buy most often?

According to analysts, in April, cars with traditional engines accounted for 58% of the new passenger car market. For comparison: last year, this figure was 56%. Gasoline-powered cars accounted for the largest share of sales—39% of the total new car market. In 2025, their share was 36%.

Experts attribute this trend to several factors:

● the lower cost of gasoline-powered models compared to electric cars;

● the availability of service and repairs;

● a more stable infrastructure for use;

● lower risks during long-distance trips.

This remains particularly relevant for drivers who regularly travel between cities. Hybrids continue to gain popularity

One of the main trends of 2026 has been the growing popularity of hybrid cars. While their share was around 29% last year, it has now approached 33%.

The reason is obvious: hybrids allow you to combine the fuel efficiency of electric power with the convenience of a traditional engine without being completely dependent on charging infrastructure.

That is why more and more Ukrainians are viewing hybrid models as a compromise between a classic car and an electric vehicle.

Why is the popularity of electric vehicles declining?

Unlike hybrids, electric vehicles lost market share in 2026. The share of electric vehicles among new passenger cars has dropped from approximately 15% to 9%.

Possible reasons include:

● the high cost of new electric vehicles;

● the unstable energy situation;

● an insufficient number of charging stations in some regions;

● long trips that require careful route planning.

Despite this, the electric vehicle segment remains an important part of the market, especially in large cities.

Diesel and LPG: What’s Happening with Demand?

Diesel vehicles maintain a stable position in the market. In April, their share stood at 19% compared to 20% last year. Diesel is most often chosen by drivers for whom the following are important:

● fuel efficiency over long distances;

● high engine durability;

● comfort for intercity travel.

At the same time, cars with LPG systems remain a niche segment. As was the case last year, they accounted for less than 1% of new car sales.

Which models became leaders in their segments?

“Ukravtoprom” also named the models that topped sales in various engine categories.

The leaders in April were:

● among gasoline cars — Hyundai Tucson;

● among hybrids — the Toyota RAV-4;

● among diesel models — the Renault Duster;

● among electric vehicles — the BYD Leopard 3;

● among cars with LPG systems — the Hyundai Tucson.

These models demonstrate stable demand thanks to a combination of price, technical specifications, and adaptability to Ukrainian roads.
