Chernivtsi is an ideal starting point for short trips: from here, it’s easy to reach the Dniester Canyon, the Carpathian Mountains, and the historic towns of Podillia. One- and two-day tours let you explore the most interesting destinations in western Ukraine without lengthy travel times or complicated planning. The Visit Ukraine portal offers several ready-made itineraries from Chernivtsi, ranging from cruises on the Dniester to mountain hikes and guided city tours.

We’ll tell you exactly what these tours include and what to expect from each of them in the article below.

Trips along the Dniester and Podillia: canyons, yachts, and medieval architecture

A significant portion of the itineraries from Chernivtsi lead to the Dniester Canyon—one of the largest in Europe. The “Dniester Weekend + Yacht Cruise” tour is designed for those who want to combine active recreation with a more leisurely pace. Participants climb Love Hill for a 360° panoramic view of the widest stretch of the Dniester, enjoy breakfast outdoors, visit the so-called “Turkish House” for a tasting of homemade kvass, and spend time near the Wind Rocks. The highlight of the day is a four-hour yacht cruise on the Dniester Sea with the opportunity to swim. The program also includes little-known photo spots not found in standard guidebooks.

The “Treasures of Podillia” tour offers a different perspective on the canyon. The route begins in the village of Subich, which offers some of the best panoramic views of the Dniester Canyon, followed by a stop in Bakota for a tour of the ancient rock monastery and three holy springs. Near the Dniester, there is free time to relax on the beach. The trip concludes at “Trav’yarna”: here, participants will learn about the process of harvesting herbs and enjoy a generous tasting of herbal teas, honey, cheeses, fruit liqueurs, wine, and local snacks.

The third route in this direction is “Kamianets-Podilskyi + Rafting through the Smotrych Canyon”. The trip combines a walking tour of the medieval city accompanied by one of Podillia’s best guides and a two-day rafting trip through the Smotrych River Canyon. During the rafting trip, you can see three different types of canyon, a picturesque waterfall, and several bridges that the route passes under. After the active part, there’s an opportunity to have a picnic with views of the canyon.

Carpathian Routes: Mountain Peaks, Poloninas, and Lakes

For those more drawn to the mountains, there are several one-day hikes of varying difficulty levels. The “Mt. Kostel + Chemygivsky Canyon (Weekend Tour)” begins in the Hutsul village of Mykulychyn.

The first stop on the route is the Chemegivsky Canyon, where mountain cliffs meet the river and green slopes. Next is the ascent to Mount Kostel along a 2.5-kilometer trail through the forest, offering panoramic views. At the summit, a sweeping panorama of the Carpathians unfolds, and on one of the slopes, there is a photogenic swing with a view of the mountains. The descent follows a different 4.5-km trail, allowing participants to see even more Carpathian scenery.

“Hike to Yavirnyk-Gorgan” involves an early departure from Chernivtsi and a route through Yaremche. Participants follow a picturesque trail to a mountain pasture with small huts, where they take a break and have a snack, and then climb to the summit of Yavirnyk-Gorgan. This tour is suitable for those looking for a full day in the mountains with vivid impressions, but without the need to stay overnight.

The longest hiking route is “Hike to Lake Rosokhan” (13.5 km). The trail runs through the Gorgany Mountains: forest roads, waterfalls, and mountain springs with clear water. Along the way, there’s a stop at a gazebo for tea or coffee, and the final destination is Lake Rosokhan, located at an altitude of 1,120 m. At the lake, there’s plenty of time to relax, have lunch, and take photos amidst the tranquility of Carpathian nature.

A tour of Chernivtsi and a women’s themed tour

The tour “Chernivtsi — ‘Little Vienna’ in Bukovina’” deserves special attention—a walking tour for those who want to explore the city in greater depth. The route covers Teatralna, Centralna, and Turetska Squares, a stroll down Olha Kobylianska Street with its cafes and Viennese-style architecture, and a tour of the Drama Theater, the Palace of Justice, and the Art Museum. Participants will hear legends about the city’s origins, learn why Chernivtsi is called the city of poets and musicians, and have the chance to take a photo with a trumpeter on Central Square. The final stop is Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University, whose metropolitan residence is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Another option is the Women’s Tour “Returning to Oneself—In the Embrace of Nature”, designed as a one-day trip. The route passes through the Zalishchyky observation deck, the Brunytsky Palace with its arboretum, a little-known panoramic view of Zalishchyky, and the Chervone tract with castle ruins and the 16-meter-high Chervony Waterfall.

Throughout the day, participants engage in grounding exercises, fairy tale therapy, standing on nails, and the “Walk of Power.” The tour concludes with a picnic featuring sound therapy and relaxation. This is a route for those seeking a reset and time alone with their thoughts amidst nature.
