If you’re planning a trip around Europe this year that takes in several countries, you’re spoilt for choice. With the launch of new night trains from Paris to Berlin and extensive routes from Basel in Switzerland to Copenhagen in Denmark, the transport network is expanding to include ever more unique destinations.

Those planning a trip to Central Europe in the coming months should take note of the launch of a new direct train service from Germany to Belgium. This route passes through six stunning yet relatively little-known cities that undoubtedly deserve a place on your itinerary.

Timetable and ticket prices: Cologne–Antwerp train

From 7 September 2026, Germany’s national rail operator (Deutsche Bahn) and the Belgian operator (SCNB) will officially launch the first direct service on ICE (Intercity-Express) high-speed trains between Cologne and Antwerp. Until now, most ICE services have terminated in Brussels, so the extension of the line is excellent news for travellers.

The total journey time from the starting point to the final destination will be just 2 hours 25 minutes. Two additional trains will run daily in each direction. The first morning service from Cologne departs at 06:30 and arrives in Antwerp at 09:00, whilst the evening service departs at 17:30, arriving at 19:45. In the opposite direction, trains depart from Antwerp at 11:00 (arriving in Cologne at 13:24) and at 19:00 (arriving at 21:23).

As for the cost of a one-way ticket, it depends on when you buy it and the class of carriage. Early booking at a super-saver fare will cost approximately $35–55. If you prefer a standard flexible ticket, expect to pay between $75 and $140, whilst a comfortable first-class journey will cost between $110 and $220.

What to see in Cologne: Gothic architecture and beer gardens

Cologne is the starting point of the new route. This lively city on the banks of the Rhine in western Germany is best known for its famous Cologne Cathedral. This majestic Gothic structure took centuries to build, and its towers proved so sturdy that they withstood the bombings of the Second World War.

Although the historic Old Town was less fortunate, many of its half-timbered buildings and cobbled streets have been carefully restored.

Today, Cologne is also famous for its unique beer culture. Travellers often recommend spending a Thursday evening over a glass of traditional Kölsch in one of the local establishments, such as the lively Biergarten am Aachener Weiher.

Aachen’s sights: the legacy of Charlemagne

Aachen is one of Germany’s oldest cities and an often underrated cultural centre. It was once the favourite residence of Charlemagne — the ruler who shaped medieval Europe to a great extent.

The city’s pride and joy is Aachen Cathedral, which became Germany’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stands in stark contrast to standard Gothic structures: at its heart lies an octagonal core that is over 1,200 years old. As Aachen lies on the border with Belgium and the Netherlands, the city boasts a unique international atmosphere, where green cycle paths sit alongside stalls selling Belgian chips.

Liège, Belgium: industrial charm and authentic waffles

The first stop on the Belgian side is Liège. In the past, it was a small ecclesiastical state (the Prince-Bishopric of Liège), which still lends the city a somewhat rebellious spirit. Situated on the winding River Meuse, Liège was for a long time a centre of the metallurgical and coal industries, which is why its architecture has a stark, industrial feel, contrasting with ancient Gothic buildings such as the 13th-century Liège Cathedral.

A tip for foodies: This is where the famous Liège waffles are made — thick, with chunks of caramelised sugar inside. You can burn off the calories from such a dessert by climbing the famous Montagne de Buren staircase, consisting of 374 steps.

Leuven: a beautiful medieval town without the tourist crowds

Many guidebooks direct tourists to Bruges or Ghent, but if you want to avoid the crowds, Leuven is the perfect alternative. Located not far from Brussels, this city boasts one of the best-preserved medieval centres in the whole country. Its winding alleys and lavishly decorated town hall, which looks more like a fairytale castle, will not leave history lovers indifferent.

Brussels’ main attractions

Brussels evokes mixed feelings among tourists: some criticise it for its never-ending construction work and bureaucratic atmosphere, whilst others fall genuinely in love with it. However, the Grand Place (the city’s central square) is an absolute masterpiece. Surrounded by gilded guild houses, it is considered the heart of the Belgian capital.

Nearby stands the serene and majestic Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula.

The secret of Brussels is that it is best viewed from above. A magnificent panorama of the spires of the Grand Place unfolds from the roof of the Musical Instruments Museum.

Antwerp: Belgium’s best city for a holiday

Whilst Brussels is a cosmopolitan hub dominated by the French language and the austere architecture of the EU institutions, Antwerp is a true Belgian metropolis, the final stop on our itinerary and the country’s largest Dutch-speaking centre. It is a city that combines fashion, art, diamonds and stunning architecture, offering tourists the quintessence of the Belgian way of life.
