President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that Switzerland will take a direct part in the restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, which sustained serious damage as a result of the Russian attack on June 15.
Consequences of the Strike on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
During the nighttime shelling of the capital, a Russian drone struck the St. Stephen’s Chapel—the altar area of the Assumption Cathedral. The fire that broke out at the site of the strike was quickly extinguished by rescue teams from the State Emergency Service. Another strike damaged the Ioann Kushnik Tower—a unique 17th–18th-century defensive structure that is part of the Upper Lavra fortification complex.
The damaged complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is officially under the enhanced protection of the Hague Convention; however, its international status did not spare the historic monument from significant damage.

Restoration of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra
Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke about the agreements reached with European partners in an audio statement to journalists on Tuesday. The head of state noted that he had discussed this issue in detail on Monday during a personal meeting with the President of Switzerland, which he attended before heading to the G7 summit in France.
The Swiss side expressed its readiness to finance the work and provide the necessary expertise to preserve Ukraine’s cultural heritage.
“We discussed the restoration of the Lavra, and they will work on this together with our specialists. Thank you, Switzerland, for this initiative and support,” the President emphasized.
Incidentally, assistance in the restoration of this religious and cultural shrine is fully in line with Bern’s foreign policy. Switzerland strictly adheres to its historical status of permanent neutrality. In accordance with this principle, the country does not provide military aid to Ukraine, does not supply weapons, and does not allow the re-export of Swiss-made weapons from third countries into the conflict zone.
Instead of supporting the defense sector, Switzerland focuses its efforts exclusively on humanitarian missions, financial support for the civilian population, and the protection of cultural heritage—which formed the basis for the joint project to restore the Lavra.
