Для иностранцев поездка в Украину на собственном авто в условиях военного положения может вызвать определенные сложности. Узнайте все необходимое о процедуре автострахования, дорожных условиях и пересечении границы в Украину
For foreigners, travelling to Ukraine by their own car can be either a regular routine or a new experience. In any case, such a trip should take into account all factors, as it is most inconvenient to deal with car insurance or medical insurance for drivers in a foreign country - you need to take care of this in advance. A separate point of convenience and safety during the trip is the martial law in Ukraine. The unstable situation affects absolutely everything: the duration of the journey (take into account stops at checkpoints), traffic patterns, workload of service stations, petrol stations and many other nuances. We tell you everything you need to know for drivers planning a trip from Europe to Ukraine in this article.
Preparing for a trip to Ukraine
To make your trip successful, plan your route and prepare a package of documents in advance. This way you will save time and not worry about possible problems at the border.
How do I plan my route?
You can enter Ukraine through Poland, Slovakia, Romania, Moldova, and Hungary. Currently, there are no queues at the border, but before the holidays it is better to build a route through the following checkpoints (assuming no queues):
- with the Republic of Poland: Uhryniv, Rava-Ruska, Hruszów, Smilnica, Nyzhankovychi;
- with Slovakia: Maly Berezny, Uzhhorod;
- with Romania: any of the points;
- with Moldova: any of the points;
- with Hungary: Dzvinkove, Kosyno, Luzhanka.
Documents required to cross the border
1. National driver's licence containing the expiry date
(Annex 6 of the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic)
2. Car registration certificate
3. Identification mark of the country of origin on the vehicle
4. Contract of compulsory insurance of civil liability of vehicle owners covering the territory of Ukraine (Green Card)
5. Number plate on the car
6. Foreign passport
Please note! For a trip to Ukraine, it is recommended to take out both health insurance and car insurance, taking into account the coverage of military risks, as there are no absolutely safe regions in Ukraine.
Road conditions and safety measures
In order not to waste extra time choosing the best roads in Ukraine, we recommend that you find out all the details in advance. Important nuances include traffic patterns, road conditions, stops at checkpoints, and the operation of service stations, petrol stations and tow trucks.
Current road conditions and driving in Ukraine
In 2025, the road situation in Ukraine is primarily related to the processes of recovery and European integration. Currently, as part of the European integration process, active implementation of European road construction and maintenance standards is expected, which involves improving the quality of road surfaces and developing a network of modern motorways. However, there are still sections of roads that require major repairs, and there may be temporary traffic restrictions on certain routes due to ongoing restoration works.
Road safety
1. During the period of martial law, curfews were imposed in most regions of Ukraine (except for Zakarpattia). During this time, driving without a special permit is prohibited!
2. Checkpoints are now located mainly in the southern, central and eastern regions, so when planning a route through these regions, leave yourself extra time in case of inspection.
3. If you are planning to move through the area close to the front line or through the liberated territories, be careful and cautious not to come across dangerous shells.
Important! Service stations, petrol stations and tow trucks in Ukraine operate in a standard mode, but subject to air raid alarms.
