Walking tour of Lychakiv Cemetery
About the tour
Walking tour of Lychakiv Cemetery
A trip to Lviv is not complete without a walk through Lychakiv Cemetery. Originally opened in 1787 in accordance with the Austrian law on the transfer of burials from the city center, the cemetery has become one of the best in Europe.
Generations of Lviv residents were buried here, especially the intelligentsia, bourgeoisie, and gentry. Initially, most of the plots were taken over by Poles, and there are many great names, including the poet Maria Konopnytska and the world-famous mathematician Stefan Banach. But the prominent Ukrainian writer Ivan Franko and one of the greatest opera singers of the first half of the twentieth century, Solomiya Krushelnytska, are also buried here. After the Second World War, more and more Soviet tombs were squeezed into the already crowded necropolis.
For several centuries now, it has been not just a tomb, but a magnificent park, an open-air museum, and an architectural urban reserve.
