The Carpathians and Transcarpathia remain among the most attractive destinations for domestic tourism in Ukraine. The region offers a combination of natural landscapes, historical sites, and culinary experiences that are hard to find elsewhere in the country. Thermal springs, mountain meadows, medieval castles, and authentic cuisine—all of this is accessible within a few days’ trip.
In this article, we describe four itineraries through Transcarpathia, each of which reveals a different side of the region, from relaxing by thermal pools to exploring unique historical sites.
Transcarpathian Relaxation: Thermal Springs, Palanok Castle, and Shipit Waterfall
This three-day itinerary covers iconic natural and historical sites in Transcarpathia. Among the natural attractions are the Soima mineral springs, Lake Synevyr at an altitude of over 980 meters surrounded by coniferous forests, the “Valley of Wolves” eco-park, and Shipit Waterfall—one of the region’s most famous waterfalls. For active recreation, the itinerary includes a jeep tour to the Hymba mountain pasture or a ride on the chairlift offering panoramic views of the Carpathians.
The historical program features Palanok Castle in Mukachevo—a centuries-old fortress on a volcanic hill—and the Arpad Line bunker, a defensive structure from World War II. The relaxation component includes the Kosyno thermal springs with several pools, saunas, and a water park. The gastronomic part features lunch at a Carpathian kolyba, a tasting of Transcarpathian wines, and a visit to a cheese factory in Bilasovychi with authentic local cheeses.
10 Highlights of Transcarpathia: Schönborn Palace, the bears of Synevyr, and Hungarian estates
The three-day itinerary begins at Schönborn Palace—a 19th-century Neo-Gothic residence with a park of rare plants. Next is Mukachevo with Palanok Castle and Uzhhorod with its historic center and castle architecture. Both cities feature well-preserved architecture from various eras—from the Middle Ages to the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The natural part of the route includes the Synevyr Pass with panoramic views, Synevyr National Park, and a brown bear rehabilitation center. In Berehove, there is a thermal pool and wine tasting; in Vynogradiv, there is Transcarpathian cheese tasting; and in Lumshory, there is bathing in wooden vats, which has become a hallmark of the region. Staying at Hungarian rural tourism estates allows you to experience the daily life and culinary traditions of the Hungarian community in Transcarpathia.

Eco-tour of Transcarpathia: wine cellars, the Templar Castle, and a monastery cheese dairy
This one-day itinerary from Uzhhorod connects four locations. The first is the ruins of the Templar Castle (11th–16th centuries), one of Ukraine’s most mysterious castles, associated with the Knights Templar. The second is the Serednyanska wine cellars, among the oldest in Europe: with a total length exceeding 4.5 km, they were carved into the tuff rock in 1557 by Turkish prisoners. The Serednyanska Winery is known for its vintage wines “Rose of Transcarpathia,” “Pearl of the Carpathians,” and “Serednyanske.”
The third stop is the Holy Protection Monastery with a cheese factory, where cheeses are made using Italian techniques. The tour concludes with a visit to a Romani settlement in the mountains of Transcarpathia, where you’ll learn about the daily life and traditions of the local residents. The excursion lasts approximately 7 hours, with part of the route running through the Carpathian foothills and part through the Middle Danube Lowlands.
Vynogradiv — the royal city: arboretum, buffalo farm, and medieval churches
This one-day excursion from Uzhhorod is dedicated to the Vynogradiv region — a former outpost on the Salt Road, through which salt was transported from Solotvyno to Europe. The route begins at the “Berezinka” arboretum with its collection of exotic trees, then continues to the village of Velyka Kopanya (“the capital of twins”) and the ruins of Kankiv Castle (11th–17th centuries) on the ledge of Black Mountain, which in ancient times could rival the scale of Mukachevo’s Palank.
The town of Vynogradiv—the historic center of the Ugocha Committee in northern Transylvania—preserves Baron Pereni’s palace, the Ascension Church, the Franciscan monastery, and original bronze monuments. Other highlights of the route include Ukraine’s only buffalo farm with mozzarella and dairy tastings, a functioning 14th-century church and the region’s tallest 18th-century wooden bell tower in Chetfalva, a 14th-century fortified church in Bene, and a tasting in the wine cellar of renowned winemaker Ivan Ursta.
