Rafting in Ukraine is becoming an increasingly popular form of outdoor recreation every year. The mountain rivers of the Carpathians and the canyons of Podillia offer routes of varying difficulty—from gentle trips for beginners to rapid rapids for experienced athletes. There’s plenty to choose from: two-day programs, week-long tours with excursions, and even one-day adventures in picturesque canyons.

Which routes are worth considering for your first or next rafting trip—we’ll tell you more in this article.

The Black Cheremosh is one of Ukraine’s most famous rafting rivers. The stretch from Dzembronia to Verkhovyna is renowned for its rapid rapids with evocative names: Didiv Likot, Bila Kobyla, Huchky, and Huk. This is where several tour routes pass through, and it’s no coincidence—the combination of fast currents, mountain scenery, and accessible logistics makes the Cheremosh an ideal spot for rafting.

On the two-day tour “Rafting on the Cheremosh and Bukovel”, participants get to see not only the river but also iconic locations in the Carpathian Foothills. The first day is dedicated to a drive through Halych, including a visit to the National Nature Park and the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, a stop in Yaremche near the waterfall, and a ride on the chairlift to the summit of Mount Bukovel. Overnight stay — at Hutsul eco-tourism homestays in Verkhovyna. The second day features the rafting trip down the Black Cheremosh and a visit to the “Grandfather’s Pharmacy” tasting museum in Kryvorivnia. The tour lasts two days and departs from Lviv.

Three-day rafting tour in the Carpathians: for those who want more water

The “Three Days on the Cheremosh” tour is centered around the rafting itself. Over the course of three days, participants navigate the rapids of the Black Cheremosh several times, each time having the opportunity to try different watercraft—rafts, inflatable kayaks, and packrafts. Experienced instructors provide safety training and instruction on the basics of paddling, so the route is suitable even for first-time rafters.

The base is the “White Elephant Dzembronya” camp, which provides lodging, three meals a day, and hot showers. In addition to the water activities, the second day includes a 10-kilometer hike along the Stepansky–Kosarysche ridge, offering panoramic views of the Chornohora range.

The tour begins and ends in Vorokhta.

Rafting as part of a mountain tour: five days in the Carpathians

For those who want to combine rafting with excursions and other activities, the “Summer in the Carpathians” mountain tour is a great fit. This is a five-day program based in Yaremche, where rafting on the Cheremosh River is one of the key highlights alongside jeeping on Carpathian roads, visiting the Trufanets and Huk waterfalls, a trip to Bukovel, and an excursion to Verkhovyna.

The rafting takes place on the fourth day and starts from Dzembronia. Catamarans with instructors are available for participants, and for more experienced ones—two-person, four-person, and six-person catamarans, as well as kayaks and canoes. The duration of the water portion, including instruction, is about three hours. This format is convenient for those who want to try rafting as part of a broader trip through the Carpathians.

Rafting through the Smotrytsky Canyon: Rafting Outside the Carpathians

Rafting in Ukraine isn’t just about the Carpathians. The “Kamianets-Podilskyi + Rafting through the Smotrych Canyon” tour offers a completely different experience: a walking tour of one of the country’s most beautiful cities and a two-day rafting trip through the Smotrych River Canyon.

During the rafting trip, participants navigate three different types of canyon, see a picturesque waterfall, and pass under several bridges. The route is calmer than the rapids in the Carpathians, making it suitable for families and those who prefer a leisurely pace. After the rafting trip, you can enjoy a picnic with views of the canyon. This tour is a great option for a day trip from Podillia or neighboring regions.
