New Zealand has announced the extension of a special visa for Ukrainian citizens who have taken refuge in the country since February 24 for another year.

When does the period of stay of Ukrainians in New Zealand expire?

Immigration Minister Michael Wood said the government would extend the visa until March 15, 2024

This will allow people to travel to the country on a visa for twelve months instead of nine.

"We recognize the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on its people, as well as the efforts of the New Zealand Ukrainian community to support their family members", - Wood said.

What other changes have been introduced for refugees?

In addition, under the new conditions of entry, a visa applicant can also nominate an "eligible sponsor" who will take financial responsibility for their arrival in New Zealand, rather than relying on a family member alone.

The criteria for family members who can sponsor a visa applicant will also be expanded.

In particular, the government has decided to extend the waiver of immigration fees for Ukrainian applicants to ensure that immigration costs are not an obstacle for eligible individuals.

Special visa holders also have access to public healthcare, and their children can attend school as local students, while adults can attend free English classes in the country.

As you know, in connection with the war in Ukraine, New Zealand launched a special visa for Ukrainians in 2022, which allows New Zealanders of Ukrainian descent to apply for a visa to bring their family members who are in Ukraine to New Zealand.

We remind you! The Czech government plans to make changes to social solidarity payments for those who have sheltered Ukrainians. Read more about what may change and who may be left without payments here.
