Ukraine's path to Euro 2024: are there any chances to qualify for the tournament after Italy's defeat?
The Ukrainian national team continues to fight for a ticket to the final part of Euro 2024. The last matches were the most important for the "yellow-blues" in the qualification round. Find out what situation the Ukrainian team finds itself in and what they need to do now to qualify for the European tournament
The Ukrainian national football team played its September matches as part of the qualification for Euro 2024 to be held in Germany. We're going to tell you how the Ukrainian players performed and whether they still have a chance to qualify for the prestigious European tournament.
As part of the 5th and 6th qualifying rounds, the Ukrainian national team played matches against the favorites of their group, England and Italy. The Ukrainians managed to get only one point in two matches.
Ukraine - England
The match between the two national teams took place on September 9 in Wroclaw (due to the war, Ukraine is forced to play its home matches in third countries).
In this match, the English dominated the field, but the Ukrainian team did not allow Foggy Albion to realize all their chances. In addition, Ukrainian players were able to score against the English. As a result, the match ended with a score of 1-1, giving Ukraine one point.
After the match with England, Ukrainian fans' morale rose and they hoped to fight for points in the match against the equally difficult opponent, Italy.
Italy - Ukraine
Just 3 days after the difficult match against the English, the Ukrainian national team played an away game against the Italians. The match took place on September 12 at the famous San Siro Stadium in Milan.
From the very beginning of the match, the Scudra Azzurra made it clear that the match would be very difficult for the Ukrainians. Already in the first half, the Italians scored two goals, but at the end of the first 45 minutes, the Ukrainian team managed to score one goal. The match ended with a score of 2-1.
Thus, in the two most important matches from the point of view of the group favorites, the Ukrainian team managed to get only one point.
Group C standings
In this qualification, the Ukrainian national team has already played 5 matches and managed to score 7 points. Now the Yellow and Blues are ranked 3rd in the group, behind England and Italy. At the same time, the latter still has one match to play.
Also, the national team of North Macedonia should not be underestimated, which after 5 matches has also scored 7 points and is on the heels of the Ukrainians.
The standings of Group C are as follows:
1. England - 13 points;
2. Italy - 7 points;
3. Ukraine - 7 points;
4. North Macedonia - 7 points;
5. Malta - 0 points.

Does Ukraine have any chances of reaching the final stage of Euro 2024?
Given the situation in the standings, the Ukrainian national team still has a chance to make it to the tournament, but for this to happen, the Yellow and Blues need to win all three of their next matches against North Macedonia, Malta, and Italy.
It would also be good news for the Ukrainian national team if the Italians lose the return match against England. In this case (with three wins), the Ukrainian team will be able to reach Euro 2024.
How did Ukraine play at the Euros before?
It is worth noting that in the history of independent Ukraine, the national team of this country has been represented in the final part of the prestigious European tournament only twice - in 2012, when Ukraine hosted the Euro, and in 2020, when the Ukrainian national team showed a stunning performance in qualifying, and then in the final part made it to the ¼ stage, where it lost to the future finalist England.
It was in 2020 that the Ukrainian national team showed a historic result at the Euros, repeating the success of the 2006 World Cup. Back then, the Ukrainians also managed to make it to the ¼ finals.
We remind you! The history of the Ukrainian national team includes many victories and quite a few defeats. Unfortunately, it has never won the most prestigious tournaments, but Ukrainian players always try to show quality football to please their fans. Here's how Ukraine shone in 2005 and got a ticket to the World Cup for the first time.
