The National Security Service of Ukraine plays an important role in ensuring the national security and defense of the country. It continues to fulfill its tasks in a challenging environment and contributes to strengthening Ukraine's sovereignty and protecting it from various threats.

We are going to tell you about the tasks performed by the SSU employees, their importance and successful operations.

The history of the establishment of the National Security Service of Ukraine

After Ukraine declared its independence on August 24, 1991, the issue of liquidating the Soviet system of state security agencies and creating a new state body to protect sovereignty and address other national security issues immediately arose. 

The first step was the establishment of a commission to develop a concept for the creation of a national security body: On September 20, 1991, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a resolution on the establishment of the National Security Commission of Ukraine. 

Between September 1991 and February 1992, the staff of the Central Secretariat of the NSDC, regional bodies and military intelligence agencies were trained and certified. Recruitment for service began, and employees took an oath of allegiance to the Ukrainian people. 

On March 25, 1992, the Verkhovna Rada adopted the Law on the Security Service of Ukraine, which put the further development of the Security Service within a fairly clear legal framework.

The importance of the SSU during the war

The Security Service of Ukraine has undergone many changes and transformations, and the Revolution of Dignity and the russian occupation of the east of the country have introduced new rules to the work of this organization. 

The new challenges facing Ukraine have prompted the SSU to reform, mobilize its forces and resources to the maximum extent possible, and find ways to solve the most complex problems of the day. 

Today, the SSU understands the challenges facing the country better than ever. The Service counteracts hybrid warfare and international terrorism, ensures information security, protects critical infrastructure, neutralizes hacker attacks and prevents multibillion-dollar losses to the state budget. 

Each SSU employee - counterintelligence officers, cyber specialists, operational units and inspectors - works as part of a large but cohesive team in their areas of responsibility and strives to perform their tasks as efficiently as possible. 

In recent years, the SSU has switched to wartime operations. In addition to fighting internal enemies, the Service's employees are arming and defeating external enemies on the front line. 

The Security Service of Ukraine has conducted hundreds of battles and special operations in the hottest regions of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the full-scale occupation, the SBU has exposed more than 600 russian agents who were supposed to destabilize the situation from within and initiated more than 1400 proceedings under Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (high treason).

Tasks of the security service

In wartime, the SSU performs a number of important tasks. One of them is the collection, analysis and timely response to information that may threaten national security. 

They also engage in counterintelligence activities aimed at detecting and preventing the activities of spies and saboteurs. 

The SSU has a department responsible for internal security. One of the main tasks of this unit is to prevent direct penetration of foreign intelligence organizations into Ukrainian intelligence. 

Intelligence platforms that the enemy uses to destabilize the situation in Ukraine are constantly identified and blocked. 

The SSU also conducts most of its work in the liberated territories. In addition to stabilization measures, it is documenting racist war crimes and bringing the perpetrators to justice.

Successful SBU operations worthy of attention

Since the first day of the full-scale war, the SSU has captured and detained enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups, russian agents, spies and fire controllers in different parts of the country, repelled cyberattacks, protected critical infrastructure and investigated war crimes of the occupation forces. 

Of course, many of the SBU's operations remain top secret, but as far as the public knows, our special forces conducted many complex and important operations during the war. 

For example, Ukrainians will undoubtedly remember April 12 as "Cosmonautics Day". That evening, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy "marked" it with a photo of Viktor Medvedchuk, an imprisoned traitor and Putin's godfather. 

Medvedchuk's arrest not only provided evidence about the organization of the Kremlin's spy network, but also led to the release of 200 Ukrainian prisoners - defenders of Azovstal.

In May, members of the Alpha special forces, along with the Defense Intelligence Service and other special forces, landed on Zmeinyi Island and attacked enemy positions as part of an operation to liberate the island from occupation forces. 

In addition, officers of the SBU, the Alpha special forces and military counterintelligence participated in the Kharkiv, Liman and Kherson counteroffensive operations. 

The Security Service of Ukraine also began to fight the "religious fifth column" - the UOC-MP; SBU officers conducted searches in UOC-MP communities in almost all regions, during which they found russian passports, manuals, and extremist literature. 

Several clergymen were sentenced to imprisonment, and Ukraine replenished its foreign exchange fund.
