At the beginning of the week, the Internet exploded with reports of Valeriy Zaluzhny's dismissal, but the information was not confirmed. Despite the fact that the week is coming to an end and there is still no decree on his dismissal, the level of tension in society is not decreasing, and Western media continue to write that "the resignation should take place this week."

What is going on, whether there is a conflict between Zelenskyi and Zaluzhnyi, and what is known about the possible dismissal of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces - we will tell you further in the article.

What is known about Zaluzhny's resignation?

On January 29, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi was invited to a meeting on Bankova Street. According to most Ukrainian media, three people took part in the conversation: Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Valeriy Zaluzhnyy, and Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. Thus, during the conversation, the President of Ukraine informed the Commander-in-Chief that a decree on his resignation would be signed in the near future. That same evening, this information began to be actively disseminated by anonymous telegram channels and the media. However, the dismissal was not confirmed that day, and as of the morning of February 2, there was no corresponding decree from Zelensky.

This topic was also picked up in the West, as CNN reported on February 1, citing "two sources," that the president was going to announce the dismissal of the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi by the end of the week. The outlet also said that Zaluzhnyi had been offered another position, but had refused it. At the same time, The New York Times said that the commander-in-chief was not dismissed because of a media leak.

Is there a conflict between Zelenskyi and Zaluzhnyi?

Talks about a conflict between the military and political leadership in Ukraine have been going on for months. According to Ukrainian media, interlocutors close to the President's Office confirm the existence of problems. At the same time, they note that the conflict began in the spring of 2022, when Russian troops were pushed back from Kyiv. Similar theses are also broadcast by Western media.

However, there have been no official statements regarding misunderstandings or conflicts to date. At the same time, the Commander-in-Chief has not confirmed his desire for a political career, which has been repeatedly attributed to Zaluzhnyi.

What were the reasons for the resignation and why did they change their minds on January 29?

If the resignation is indeed being discussed among government officials, the real reasons for it are not known for certain. And if the decision to dismiss him was made on Monday, January 29, we also do not know the reasons why it did not happen.

In general, there are three most popular versions circulating online, according to which the resignation has not yet taken place:

– the OP is afraid of public reaction;

– Western partners intervened in the situation and expressed their rejection of Zaluzhnyi's resignation;

– the Presidential Administration has not decided who will replace the current Commander-in-Chief.

At the same time, interlocutors in the Ukrainian media claim that in the current circumstances, the resignation of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces seems to be a matter of time.

Who could become the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces?

There are currently two candidates for the position: the head of the Main Intelligence Directorate, Kyrylo Budanov, and the commander of the Land Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi. However, there is also no consensus on their appointment.

BBC sources in military circles claim that both generals do not want to take Zaluzhny's seat and have already refused this appointment. And a source close to the intelligence service, RBK-Ukraine, suggests that if Budanov received such an offer, he, as a military man, has no right to refuse it." At the same time, a second source close to the MID chief confirmed that he had indeed been offered the position of chief.

So, in this matter, as in most others, there is no consensus, and all available information is assumptions or statements by anonymous sources, which can either indicate indisputable facts or be another "throw-in" to stir up an already unstable situation.
