Record profits of Polish airlines became possible thanks to Ukrainians: details
In 2023, 10 million passengers and 1 billion in revenue would not have been possible without Ukrainians, as they account for a significant share of passenger traffic at Polish airports. Find out more about how Ukrainian citizens helped Polish carriers and why the airline development strategy takes into account the interests of Ukraine
In 2023, Polish carriers and airports made record profits. Because Ukraine has not had civilian air transportation for two years, Ukrainians have been forced to fly from neighboring countries: from airports in Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary, but most of all from Poland. And according to RBK-Ukraine, citing money.pl, this is why Polish companies have record-breaking performance.
How much money did Polish airports and airlines earn?
According to Rzeczpospolita, experts believe that passenger traffic at Rzeszow Airport would not have reached one million passengers without Ukrainians. At the same time, the Polish airline LOT would not have had a billion-dollar profit and more than 10 million passengers without the demand from Ukrainian citizens. After all, they create additional demand for passenger air transportation both from and to Poland.
For example, LOT Polish Airlines carried more than 10 million passengers in 2023 and recorded record aircraft loads. According to the carrier, its net profit for 2023 will exceed PLN 1 billion (EUR 232 million). For comparison, in 2022, the profit amounted to PLN 113 million (EUR 26.2 million), and the previous record of the carrier was recorded in 2019, when the net profit amounted to PLN 68.8 million (EUR 15.9 million).

How do Ukrainians influence the development of airlines in Poland?
For example, in 2023, Rzeszów-Jasionka Airport reached the mark of 1 million registered passengers, and flights to and from Warsaw are now operated 5 times a day. In the summer season, the airport plans to launch a direct flight to Gdansk and resume flights to New York.
In addition, the German carrier Lufthansa has also returned to Rzeszow and is currently planning to attract a share of this traffic to its centers in Frankfurt and Munich. Wizz Air and Ryanair also operate flights from the airport.
Therefore, according to aviation market analyst Dominik Sipinski, Ukrainian passengers of LOT flights from Poland help to compensate for the loss of the ability to fly to and from Ukraine, and therefore a change in strategy is advisable.
"In the new strategy, the Polish airline will focus on the development of feeder routes, mainly transatlantic flights. This will be a very attractive offer for Ukraine," Dominik Sipinski told the publication.
